Possibly still infected

    Early December I got the Thinkpoint virus. I removed that, mostly, but I am still having some odd problems. I went through all of the malware processes that I could, but I still have a few problems:

    1. I get an error on occasion 'Generic host process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close.' I don't know what this means.

    2. I get some popups and redirects when using Firefox and one version of IE. (I have 2 versions of IE on my machine, one through my ISP works fine with no redirects.) If I search for 'thinkpoint removal' on firefox, I get consistent redirects.

    3. I had some problems in the past week or so where my machine would just freeze. Usually ctrl/alt/delete wouldn't do anything at all.

    4. For whatever reason, I was unable to run Rootrepeal. After downloading the executable, I would click on it and it would say 'initializing, please wait' and just hang there (for 30 minutes +). I tried deactivating all of my antivirus, tried downloading the zip file, etc. Nothing worked.

    5. I have occasional problems with no sound when watching videos. I don't know if this is related or not. When I have this problem, if I go to the control panel, it seems to show no sound device is installed.

    So, I'm hoping someone can check out these log files and see if I still need to do some work. I saw the sticky on the redirects/popups which I haven't done yet - this may address #2. I'm just concerned that I may have bigger problems at this point, as I saw something in the combofix log about suspected root activity - I don't know what to do about that.

    Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I appreciate your efforts.

    Yes, run this as I review the other logs.

    Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    After having run TDSSKiller continue with the following:

    Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\documents and settings\Tom Gref\Local Settings\Application Data\{7970D866-84A7-4B18-86A4-33B71F62D305}
    Driver::
    hsag
    File::
    c:\windows\Nweracosuwu.bin
    c:\windows\Ekuzu.dat
    c:\windows\system32\333.js
    c:\program files\Common Files\wefemi.bin
    c:\program files\Common Files\avipulu.pif
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\wjimq.sys
    Folder::
    C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]
    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Symantec NetDriver Warning"=-

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Thanks for your quick replies. I just ran the tdss killer and it found one thing that it cured. This log file is attached.

    Earlier today I downloaded the latest version of SuperAntiSypware, but I didn't uninstall the old version (I did it before your post). I will have to check and see what happened, and I think I had to reboot the system - so it might be correct.

    I'll work through the rest of your suggestions and will follow-up with the results.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Don't wait up for me, my computer is old/slow, so I won't have any results until tomorrow anyway.

    Thanks again. Nighty night!!

    Thanks again for your help.

    I was able to follow all of your procedures. A few things were found, but I don't know how to interpret all of these log files. They are attached.

    I appreciate your very detailed and specific instructions. Without them, I'd be lost.

    My computer is functioning now OK for business purposes, so don't feel rushed in responding. I appreciate any help you can give me.

    Open up SUPERantispyware, go to Manage Quarantine and if you see this:

    You can restore it.

    And we can clean up from RootRepeal.

    Open notepad and copy and paste the following text in the quote box into the window:

    Save this as fix.bat
    Choose to save as all files.
    Double click fix.bat and let the program run.
    A small black dos window will flash, this is normal.

    You can delete these files belonging to RootRepeal.
    • c:\windows\system32\drivers\rootrep345.sys
    • c:\windows\system32\drivers\rootrer3425.sys
    I take it the machine is still running well?

    I'm not sure I quite understand this one. SAS calls this 'Rogue.Pallidium', which I'm assuming is bad. So, are you saying I should delete this from the quarantine area so that it can't be accidentally restored?

    I'm not sure if you want me to restore this, or delete it. May seem like a dumb question to you, but realize I know how to follow directions, but I don't always understand what I'm doing.

    Cleaning up from RootRepeal went fine. (These other names came up because I tried to rename the file when it wouldn't run the first time. Obviously, this didn't help - it didn't run the second or third time either!)

    Thanks, again. My computer does seem to be running fine. I tried doing the 'thinkpoint' search on firefox and it didn't redirect me.

    Should I go ahead and do the 'Toggle System Restore' step?

    It is a false positive - please refer to chaslang's post here.
    • After choosing SAS's "Manage Quarantine"
    • left-click to select Rogue.Pallidium
    • choose "Restore"
    • In the "Confirm Restore" window - choose OK
    • in the next window answer "Yes" to "Do you wish to remove (delete) the restored item from the Quarantine?"
    • now "Close" SAS

    Please wait any further instructions from Kestrel13! before doing anything else.
