    Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, running windows XP Pro on a 34 bit machine. A few days ago, I got a bug that disabled my windows (see software post herehttp://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=230822 )

I reinstalled windows, and can now boot into windows. I ran the Read and Run steps with the following results (and logs):

Avg Vault had 2 items: viruswin32/patched.gb and trojanhorse patched_c.KAI

Other scans found maybe one item? and I have logs attached.

Could not run ComboFix as I was not able to disable AVG free. I followed the steps given to disable, but those only handle the resident shield and email shield. The Anti-virus, anti-spyware and link scanner are still active in AVG. So I skipped the combofix step per instructions.

So, I assume that 'something' was found, and yes I do still have problems. I tried accessing the internet from the broken machine, to post a note, was able to get to igoogle. When I typed 'major geeks.com' into the Google search box, I get a pop up saying "the requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context". I type "Msn.com" into the address bar, and get the same message.

    Help!

    Hello, amandajsmom

    * I see something that I don't like, please run this online scanner and attach the resulting log -

    Using ESET's Online Scanner
NOTE: This scan can take more than an hour, so be patient!

Hi Dr M, thanks for helping out! So, I cannot access anything but a start page on the internet from the disabled computer,. So I'm trying to download the eset scanner from their page to an external drive, but when I go to the eset link, I do not have a choice for a download, only a 'run'. Is there another link? or can you point me to where I can download the scanner?

    Hi, amandajsmom

Eset is a scanner meant to be ran while the "infected machine" is connected to that webpage... it is not download-able.

*I'm suspecting a Virut infection and need verification. Can you burn any of the below to disc and then run it/them on the infected machine? *Have all personal files/data been saved to disc/ DVD/external media?

    Avira Rescue CD
    AVG Rescue CD
    BitDefender Rescue USB
    F-Secure Rescue CD
    Kaspersky Rescue Disk

    Hi Dr M
thanks to a computer geek, when I bought the new (now infected) computer, he set me up with a 1Tb external drive and mimeo auto-backup, so I think I have all my original files.

I have a laptop that I can use to access the internet, and a 120GB usb drive, so I will try to download those rescue links you sent to the drive, and run them on the infected machine.

Does it matter which one? I have AVG 8.5 free right now, and can't turn it off 100%.

*Burning a rescue cd should not conflict with an AV application installed on either the "transfer" or the "infected" machine.

I would suggest trying Avira to start ( assuming you can boot from a CD - you may need to change to boot order in your BIOS to boot from CD before the hard disk )

Please follow the instructions given on this webpage: http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-antivir-rescue-system

Oops, sorry, I'm confused. Burning a rescue cd is just that - a cd to boot from? I was thinking I could copy the files to an external drive, then copy to the desktop of the infected computer and run?

I did go to the first avira link given, and it brings me to a page to buy or download software, but nothing about a rescue cd. The new link you posted does bring me to the Rescue System page, and they say to burn it to a cd/dvd and boot off that disk.

I'll dig around the house for a disk to burn to, and see how it goes.

I would strongly caution you about connecting any writable media (flashdrive/memorystick/usbdrive) to this infected machine, because they can get infected too.

You need to burn a rescue CD, insert the CD in the infected pc, set the BIOS boot order to "First boot CD", re-boot the machine and follow the prompts once the CD boots.

Found a cd... buring Avira now and O.M.G. is it slooooowww. But, I'm patient and have lots of wine :)

I will check in after I boot from the cd- do I understand correctly that I need to shut down the infected computer, start it up with the Avira cd in the drive, and F12 to change the system to "boot from CD"? please let me know if that is what I should do next, thanks!!!!

disk burn at 18% and counting.... glug, glug, glug :)

Sorry, I was posting while you were replying. I do understand what to do next.

I have the infected computer connected to the internet, and I needed to run scans (and update the scan files). Let me know if I should disconnect.

The backup drive has been powered off since right after the infection occured.

The external drive has been used. Is there a place to get instructions on cleaning up a usb external hard drive?

  11. dr.moriarty

dr.moriarty Malware Super Sleuth Staff Member

A re-boot is needed after you change the boot order, to allow the cd to load before it boots to the harddrive.

  12. amandajsmom

    amandajsmom Private E-2

sorry, trying to follow. I put the cd into the drive, shut down the computer. Then, turn on the computer. When I get the windows XP pic, I hit F12 for boot menu, select boot from cd. Then I wait? is that correct? I do not understand the reboot after the boot order, does that mean I select boot from CD, but then shut off the machine again? I do not understand how to load the cd before the windows starts up, unless the first sentance I typed is what I need to do.

By connecting the usb external hd to another fully protected and updated machine plus running the tools from our guide should properly clean it. (Barring extreme cases)

-then re-boot your machine. The CD drive has now been set to boot first before the hd and the rescue cd will load and run.

I copied the Avira to a cd-r (picked the second version). I put the cd into the infected computer, and did a 'restart' of the computer. When the windows screen came up, I hit F12 to get to the boot menu (which is split in half on the screen, odd). I chose CDrom, then hit enter. Then the computer screen turns black and says something like "boot from cdrom. No __ system dectected" (Sorry, I copied it once and the computer ate my reply). Basically it said there wasn't a boot-ing file found on the cd. I'm sure that it's looking on the cd for a bootable file because the driver makes the 'I"m running' noise.

I checked the cd. The file is on there, but it's a .iso file, don't know if that is what it is supposed to be, so I am burning a copy of the other Avira file to a new cd-r, as I am paranoid that the first cd could have caught something from the infected computer? or is malware not smart enough to write to a cd??

when I copy the avira to cd, I double click the name of the file, and get the popup for "Run or save"? and I chose save, to the cd. Is that the right way to do it?

Thanks! I'll be back on sometime in the afternoon, gotta go earn a paycheck for a bit.

I think the program I have on my laptop is a cd writer, Groove.

Tried the second program, got the same error:
    Boot from CD:
No boot device available, Press Enter key to retry
    sata-0:installed
    sata-1: installed
    sata-4: installed
    sata-5: installed

A day or two ago, I used the WIn XP PRo disc to reinstall/repair windows, however it hung up before the last step. So, I believe that the cd drive on the sick computer should be working.

    What do you recommend next?

Okay, I still may have burning issues haha, I put the 2nd Avria cd into the good computer and double clicked the file, and it say "burn avira rescue-cd" and 'select a drive' , the only drive option is my cd drive... I think I have written the files to cd but haven't burned them.

    If that aint confusing.....

    OK -

These are the instructions given on the Avira download webpage

*You should be doing this on the non-infected pc.
    • Download Avira AntiVir Rescue System to your desktop
    • Insert a blank CD/DVD into the CD-r/DVD burner drive
    • Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD.
    • Remove the disc and put it in the infected machine's CD/DVD drive
    • Power up the pc and press F12 repeatedly until you get to the Boot Menu
    • Set the BIOS boot order to "First boot CD", re-boot the machine and follow the prompts once the CD boots.

Any directions to go with the Avira? or just run it and see what happens?

Ah, okay, issue-time. Got the cd to boot, infected computer started running Avira AntiVir Rescue. First tab says "Virus Scanner", and a popup says "the scanner could not be found or the rescue systme device is unknown." So, I'm going to hit "okay" and see what happens next

Hmm, nothing seems to be happening. It appears to be just sitting there. Most of the options are grey-ed out.

    Options?

redownloaded avira. reburnt the cd. reloaded it to infected machine. avira now (fingers crossed) running and found some "stuff" already (6 dectections and 1 alert).

The avira direction says to save the scan report - where should I save it to? the infected computer (that cannot connected to the internet), or a flash drive? or just retype everything it finds here? I think I save the other logs to my external drive, and posted them here, but I'm afraid to do that, umm.... this computer that I'm on does not have any virus protection on it. I read the protect yourself from malware thread and I'm thinking of downloading AntiVir or Comodo to this machine, which do you prefer??

    :eek That's inviting trouble!
Let's eliminate the possibilities of infecting both machines. You should write down the detections from the rescue disc into a Notepad.txt and attach that to your reply.

I personally use Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus 10.0.0.609

Not my computer but while I've been waiting on avira, I've adjusted the active x, loaded latest sunjava and unloaded 6 old ones, installed a second browser, then I'm going to disable autoruns, download some free virus/spywarestuff and check on the system restore point ;)

log attached, I burned it to a cd.

*An infected restore point is better than none at all. Please perform only the steps given to you.

Using Add/Remove - uninstall AVG on the infected machine
Refer to Windows XP Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure
    1. Download ComboFix
    2. Also download the AVG Remover(32bit) 2011 version from http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools
    3. Burn both to a new CD/DVD and transfer both to the infected machine, saving them to the Desktop
    4. Run the AVG Remover tool > re-boot > run it again.
    5. Run ComboFix
    6. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    7. Burn the C:\MGlogs.zip file to disc
    8. Transfer it to the working pc and attach it to your next reply

I am not sure when Dr.M will be able to log in, but in the meantime, let's have you do this:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Hi Tim,

Thank you for jumping in, I'd love to get this machine back on it's feet this weekend.

The sick machine will not let me connect to the internet, so I've been burning all removal tools to a disk on a laptop and then copying them to the machine. At first, the machine would open a browser window, but not allow me to naviagate anywhere. Now, as of today (before I ran your steps provided) it would not even open the browser (IE 7 or 8).

I was not able to run combofix in the initial "read and run me" steps as I think my AVG prevented it. Since then I have uninstalled AVG per the link provided by Dr M, and ran combofix once per Dr M's directions.

I copied the notepad text you provided, burned it to a cd, then dropped it on top of combofix. Combo fix ran, I copied the log, and I ran the mgtools log. Logs attached.

We missed one, so you can just use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\windows\GiwC5nO45L

I am not seeing any other malware in your logs. Let's have you download FF and see if that works.

    Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

Now be sure to tell Dr.M what other issues you are having. Does FF work?

  36. amandajsmom

    amandajsmom Private E-2

Greetings from the sick machine! FF works!

I found the one file to delete, and then followed it by emptying my recycle bin too. There was one other file, created 7 minutes after that one, called "setupapi.old" and the file type is OLD file. It's 1 mg. Should I delete it also?

So, I don't have any antivirus or antimalware installed at this time, should I follow the 10+ steps in the "how to prevent malware" thread? I chose avira personal free for my other computers, does that sound good? The only firewall I have is Win XP, I can turn it off and install another one, what do you recommend?

  37. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Yes, you can remove that file as well.

You certainly can use Avira and Comodo for a firewall. Best you get them installed asap and run the AV software to be sure nothing else is found.

As to IE, I suggest you post in the software forum for that issue.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks Tim. I ran the Avira, and it said it did not detect anything :)

I installed comodo defense + alert firewall.

I am trying to uninstall combofix per your directions, but the comodo keeps popping up ... "defense + malware heuristic analysis has detected possible malware behavior in C:\32788r22fwjfw\firefox.exe" and says "combofix.exe is trying execute firefox.exe"

What is THAT all about? do I allow, as I am running combofix??

    "Thanks, Tim!"

Please "Close" ComboFix. Now physically disconnect from the internet
    • turn off Avira AV
      • right-click the Avira icon - then left-click "AntiVir Guard Enable"
    • right-click the Comodo icon - mouse over "Firewall Security Level" and select Disabled. REPEAT those same instructions, this time mouse over "Defense+ Security Level" and select Disabled
    • now try again to use "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall.

*If that doesn't work, you can just delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe; the C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that were created.

Remember to re-enable your protection appls before re-connecting your internet!

Thank you Dr M! a few final questions and comments:

    1. What did I have? and are we sure it's gone? I need to power up my backup drive and want to make sure I don't infect it.

    2. Comodo firewall prevented me from uninstalling combofix (as noted). It also prevented me from running window updates. I've disabled Comodo and am using Win XP SP3 firewall. Should I use a different firewall (uninstall comodo and install a different one?)

    3. Since I used a USB drive to transfer some files from the healthy computer to the sick computer, there is a chance the usb drive is infected, correct? could you point me to a link for cleaning travel drives?

note: I could not use IE on the sick machine. now that it is healthy, windows downloaded updates that I installed, and I can use IE again.

    Thank you so much!

    You're very welcome, amandajsmom.

This machine was infected by a malware class has been called "Trojan.Gen".

To answer your other points -
    2. As I have never experienced any of those problems,I would suggest that the pc's user carefully study the Introduction-to-Comodo-Internet-Security.html to familiarize themselves with its settings.
    3. After insuring the machine is properly protected and updated; you can scan your external storage devices with your AV and the malware scanners we used here.

    * If you wish us to check out another pc, please start a new thread.

For the external Hard Drive and a USB stick.

Insert your flash drive before you begin. Hold down the Shift key when inserting the flash drive until Windows detects it to bypass the autorun feature. This will keep the autorun.inf from executing automatically.

Please have all your removable storage devices ready for disinfection.

Download Flash Disinfector by sUBs and save it to your desktop.

    * Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
    * Your desktop and icons may disappear. This is normal.
    * It will do a cleanup of removable storage devices, and write a protected Autorun.inf file to help prevent re-infection.
    * Follow any prompts that may appear.
    * The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
    * Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    * There will be no GUI interface or log file produced.
    * Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.
