No. While I do like to go away on vacation and get away from them, I couldn't do what that woman did.

I didn't see mention of a husband. I wonder if she is single or if he chose not to go along.

Hmmm I can't stand parents who crave reflected glory or push their kids into things they don't want to further their own goals and it amazes me what people will do if there's a pay packet at the end of it.

This is factually incorrect also,it's proven fact that all things being equal people who who game or use computers on a regular basis fair better in logical tasks and Interactive entertainment is used as therapy for people with head trauma and elderly people, anyone who's seen someone stare at the wall or even TV all day then start using computers can see the improvement it makes.

EDIT The cognitus interruptus she describes is most likely the language bandwidth barrier, doing everything at 500mph on a computer or game then slowing down to speaking speed is boring and predictable,I think so anyway.

Agreed. Furthermore, I believe it's basically the equivalent of someone saying we aren't going to use our telephone 20-50 years ago, or our car. 'Hey kids! I have a good idea! when you want to talk to your friends you'll need to walk a few miles to do it like before we had these kinds of things!' rolleyes

People need to learn how to balance the tech we have, not give it up.

Given a choice, I'd keep the net and mobile. Quit the idiot box or a gaming console.
TBH I'd still live without all.. worst case scenario.

@Rikky, you did not answer the question:-D

I think I'd go crazy way before 6 months,ATM the hardest thing for me would be not having movies or wikipedia,I've not gamed for a while.

If she is single she may be lonely,as you get older you lose your network of school friends and people who live locally and in many cases the only people parents have to talk to are their children so in that respect it would be a punishment for the kids but for her it would be great having her kids infinite attention in the evenings.

Then gain for some parents electronic devices are a godsend:-D

I live without gadgets now except for my computers. Now, if you had mentioned kitchen gadgets then I'd be distraught!:-D

My kids would make sure it was a punishment for me too. I can tell you it wouldn't be pleasant evenings spent bonding. :-D

To the original question - PPPFFFFTTTTT!!!!!! and then SHHHHHH, don't give my hubby any ideas!

She did it to write a book, I'm not impressed.

i survive exactly 2 weeks without anything but books every summer overseas. I think that's enough, my annual sacrifice. It's soon to come to an end, I just ordered my grandmother some crazy DSL package, €5/month for 6Mbps, first 3 months and installation is free. I must be missing some fine print in the translation because that really is too good to be true.

Someone in my family thinks that they are going to skype with my grandmother. I'm sure there will be some good stories with this adventure.

Our summer place used to have nothing but a dvd player and a few movies for the kids all summer long. That didn't last, my hubby ordered me an internet connection so fast . . . .

Oh yeah, I'm disqualified now that I don't read books, everything is on my Nook.

Could I live without tech and gadgets, well.......... NO sadly my work is all gadgets and cutting edge medical imaging tech, to my work with MSFT to my love of tech, I have a phone that allows me phonecalls, SMS, internet, MS Office Mobile, Teathering, SatNav, Camera, Video etc and in that one gadget its covering all bases, so I could loose the ease of use of a desktop or laptop, but that one gadget covers all.

Its more like the evolution of the world has turned tech, while cavemen if you asked couldnt do without FIRE, we cannot do without tech, the next generation may not be able to do without telekinetics.. who knows.

The internet is a huge loss for many and one they cannot do without, they forget the PC or router and phoneline that connects them to the internet, but ask many what hey could not do without (or in my personal circles) is the loss of internet, email, social networking etc then they are at a loss like loosing a limb!

Books I read but electronic ones ;)

Depends on the venue, I guess . . . like DavidGP my livelihood is based on gadgets, so to do without them period would mean I'd have to change jobs to "live" and support my lifestyle. I could do that and fall back on other jobs I used to have, but I wouldn't like it . . . not as spry as I used be! :(

In keeping with the original question, the answer is yes - I could do without comptuers, cell phones, TV's, etc. for six months or so at home. I'd just get more reading done! Plus I might venture outside more (Yes, dayshifter Dyamond, I have appeared in direct sunlight without vaporizing :-D). I might spend some time down in Hoosier Forest exploring and camping out. :)

I would miss it, but I wouldn't crave it. After all, I'm still on my very first cell phone! 18 months now, I've been "connected." ;)
