Letters not capitalising in Word

I have a bit of a strange, although I suppose minor, problem. Very often when I’m typing in Word it does not always capitalise the first letter of the first word in new sentences. I just wondered if this was a known problem and if there’s a fix. Let’s deal with the obvious first, yes in Office Button>Word Options>Proofing>AutoCorrect Options>AutoCorrect “Capitalize first letter of sentences” is checked.

My computer is an Acer Aspire 5920 laptop; I run MS Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2; my version of Word is Microsoft Office Word 2007.

Not positive on this, but I have heard Word has the ability to adapt itself to a user's style over time. If this is the case, Word my think you're like e.e. cummings - a poet who purposely wrote everything in lower case including the first letter of a sentence.

Aside from using the "Shift" key and proofing a document manually, try this option from Word 2007 Help:

1.Open a new document, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.
    2.Click Proofing.
3.Under When correcting grammar in Word, click Settings.
    4.Choose "Reset All".

    Hope this helps. :)

    gman, great tip.

Also curious, do you double space or single space after the period to start a new sentence? Apparently the new option is single space, which I adamantly refuse to adopt. I hope new versions of Word haven't adopted it already!

    Thanks.

Hadn't heard about the single space thing. If this is the case, Word should include a user option to choose either as a preference.

gman: thanks for that advice I'll give it ago.

As for spacing, I've always used single space. I thought double spacing went out with the the typewriter and the ark.

For those who like their double spacing follow the exact instructions gman gave me; there's an option which says "Spaces required between sentences", and you have the options of 1, 2, or don't check.

Really? It's an option now? That's interesting.

I'm much too young for typewriters and arks but I guess my typing teacher wasn't. After all of these years, the brain isn't going to change. That smooth spot on the space bar isn't going to get a break with me.

Yes, and if "Don't check" is selected, it doesn't matter how many spaces are between sentences; the first letter will be capitalized.

Played with this last night. The "don't check" option often misses where one sentence ends and a new one begins.

Hmm, it doesn't skip a beat for me. Such inconsistent behavior is surely not normal. I wonder whether there's something about your keyboard habits that might cause this.

Both Montel Williams and Maury Povich wanted to feature my keyboard habits on one of their shows. I respectfully declined. :-D

Followed your advice gman. Sorry to report it's not solved the problem.

Although I'm up to my neck in projects now I plan to search the Microsoft Knowledge Base and TechNet sites over the weekend to see if I can dig anything up on this. If I do I'll post the links.
