Where does Vista store a user's Outlook Express files? You know, the Inbox, Sent Items, Outbox, etc. I have run a search using .dbx as the search keyword (.dbx is the OE file extension, or it was with XP) and have found NOTHING other than a Roxio data base file. I know Vista (and Win7) lock out many folders, and I'm wondering if the search feature was prevented from searching in the folder where the .dbx files are, or if OE uses a different extension in Vista......

Just found this for you :

    1. Windows Vista
    2. Windows Vista stores Outlook email files at the following location:

      C:\users\username\Local\ Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
If you can't find your email files in the default location, it's usually because the path has been hidden by the default settings of the operating system. To view the default location, click on the "My Computer" or "Computer" icon, then click on the "Tools" menu and select "Folder Options".

If you can't see the Tools menu in Vista, press the "ALT" button once and the Tools menu will be visible. Click the "View" tab. Under the "Hidden Files and Folders" selection, change the radio button to "Show Hidden Files and Folders". Click "OK" to close the window and you will be able to see the path to your email files.

Outlook Express is not part of Vista. Windows Mail is the email client in Vista, and it does not use the .dbx format for storing email messages.

That pertains to Microsoft Outlook. dlb said nothing about Outlook; he said Outlook Express, which is not the same thing as Outlook, and it isn't even part of Windows Vista, as stated above.

Some info at http://www.vistax64.com/vista-mail/70254-message-store-location.html should help.

    Allchi , welcome to MajorGeeks.
Please do not insert your problem into another's thread. (This is called hijacking and isn't dome at the MajorGeeks forum).
    Instead, go here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21
click the New Thread button near the top left and paste your post into it's own thread. Someone will be along to help. In addition to the info that you are running Windows 7, please state the brand and model of computer.

dlb....the link given by usafveteran is where you will find the storage folder. You can change that. The location of your storage folders is easy to find here: <Tools/Options/Advanced/
    Maintenance/Storage Folder>.

I'm not sure if this will work for Live Mail.
    Windows Mail: C:\Users\*[username]/*AppData/*Local/*Microsoft/*Windows Mail
It said it was both for Mail and Live Mail but I don't think it is the same program.

Per http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/mi...l/115803-where-emails-stored-my-computer.html, the emails are located here:

    C:\users\(your user name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local
    Folders.

This would be the default location. If the client has moved it, which seems unlikely, then finding it will be more difficult.

The store location can be found by the method stated by TimW but I'm thinking you may not be able to do that due to the situation with the hard drive.
