    Hey all,

I've been here a million times, but have never registered. I'm having an issue with my Toshiba laptop. Original AC adaper stopped working (wouldn't power laptop and testing it, no voltage). Bought an aftermarket cheapy from Amazon.com. Worked for several hours when I first got it, then suffered the same fate. Strange the laptop ran for awhile, then the supply burned out.

DC jack is NOT soldered to the motherboard on this one, but has a connecter cable the plugs into the board. Possible it still could be bad? 7-8 years of plugging and unplugging, but the jack isn't soldered, so that wouldn't make sense. Seems that if the motherboard was bad, I wouldn't have been able to even use it for a few hours with the new adapter.

Pretty sure the battery is done for after all these years too! Can't remember when I last used it, but it's still in the laptop.

    Any thoughts?

My guess is "cheapy" is Pee Wee Herman's keyword of the day. :-D

On power supplies, you normally get what you pay for. The ones that sell for $30 or less are a gamble and can fail quickly.

On a bright note, if it's under 30 days you can normally return it for a refund; Amazon almost always sends a prepaid return shipping label.

You don't need to spend big bucks on an OEM model. Here's a decent one with a three year mfr. warranty.

Antec is usually good stuff and - if a product does break - they are usually pretty quick on replacing it.

If the PC worked for a few hours with the cheapy and you don't see any melted plastic or burn marks around the DC jack, it's doubtful anything is wrong with the PC itself.

    Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the reply! Pee Wee may have used that one :major

I figured it was a gamble on the cheaper power supply. Already got a refund for that one, and am now looking for the new one. OEM failed after 7 or so years and it was well travelled.

Antec one looks like a good buy (I've used their stuff before), just curious about the output voltage. Looks like it's rated at 19V and the stock Toshiba is rated at 15V. Make a huge difference or not?

Good catch. I thought this was the auto adjust voltage model but I was wrong.

Here's an alternate - one I'm currently using on my Sony as a second power supply. Although not rated by users, I'll give it "5 Stars". It auto adjusts voltage so it's basically goof proof. It also has a 2 year mfr. warranty.

Sorry for not reading the fine print on the Antec before my initial response.

Yes, it is a huge issue. If you give the laptop too many watts over a period of time your laptop cooks to death. Make sure whatever you buy matches 15 watts. The amps can be the same or higher but should not be lower than your Toshiba supplied adapter.

    Good point.

Just to clarify my most recent post on the SIIG model, it has automatic voltage adjustment between 15-19 volts.

    Thanks! Great feedback.

The Siig looks to be a good possibility.
