I've never done a setup like this; however I have seen up to six monitors hooked to a single PC.

To do three or more monitors, you typically need a multiple video card (SLI or Crossfire) setup. Most on-board video normally supports just one monitor; a single mid-line video card normally supports two. The keyword is "normally" (check the video card mfr.s' support site to be sure).

If you go this route, research video card reviews and specs carefully for multi-monitor setups. When a single card is being used to drive two monitors, the card's resources and performance will be split up between them.

    Hope this helped. :)

No, you don't need SLI or Crossfire. You can just use two video cards. Is your primary card a PCI Express card or AGP card. If that card supports two monitors, as many cards do, then you can add a PCI card to support the third monitor.

Are you currently using onboard video or an add-on card (PCI Express or AGP)? If an add-on card, do you know whether it can support two monitors? If it has a VGA and a DVI port, or two of the same type ports, then it most likely supports two monitors.

If you decide to buy a PCI card to add to your system, I suggest getting a card with a graphics chip made by the same manufacturer (ATI or NVidia), although is not an absolute requirement; it just tends to be less likely to result in compatibility issues. Depending on the graphics chips on the cards, the PCI card might even use the same driver as the primary card.

Well, if you're going to ask a hypothetical question, I wish you'd clearly state that. If I had known, I might not have taken time to reply to you.

Sorry if I stuck my foot in my mouth on that answer; it was based on secondhand info. from someone I had asked about their actual setup. I suspect the answer I received was skewed towards gaming performance since this was the main use of the multi-monitor system in question.

As an aside - I thought this looks pretty cool: Digital Tigers.
