How do I get my laptop to print from my PC?

I have a wireless network connected via Ethernet cable to a PC which is the master to the printer through a USB port.

I have a laptop which is connected wirelessly to the router.

I want to get the laptop to print to the printer which is connected to the printer wirelessly.

I have followed a couple of guides which have not produced any results.

How do i do this, or where can I get a guide which is reliable for getting results? Is there anything on Majorgeeks which will guide me?

Both units are running XP sp3 and the wireless router is a D-Link DI-524.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Have you enabled printer sharing on the PC to which the printer is connected? What approach did the guides lead you through?

What make and model is your printer? Is it wireless-capable? Is it networkable? By networkable, I mean can it be connected to your router? I have my Brother MFC-790CW printer connected to my D-Link DI-524 router via ethernet cable and can use the printer from any of three computers without needing to turn on any computer other than the one I'm using. One of these computers is a laptop which I use in wireless connectivity mode to the router and thereby have wireless access to the printer from the laptop. However, I could setup the printer to use a wireless connection to the router or to use a wireless connection directly from the laptop.

    Yes.

It wanted the computer names of the units and showed how to turn on printer sharing, etc.

    No.

No. The router does not have a USB port.

The printer I have is connected through a USB port. I don't know how I could possibly connect an Ethernet cable to it.

It is starting to sound like I need a different printer.

    Thanks.

So this thing plugs into one of the Ethernet ports on the router and then the USB printer plugs into the device? Too bad it takes external power. One more wire to add to the rat's nest.

    I'll check it out.

Oops. Unfortunately my printer is not on the COMPATIBILITY LIST

Right, you can't connect it by Ethernet cable since it has no Ethernet port and does not support a network

I see no reason why you can't get printer sharing working. But, since you've not been able to get that working, plodr's suggestion may be your best option.

If you want to pursue printer sharing further, this reference may help: Share Your Printer Over a Home Network Using Windows XP

How far do you get? Are you able to browse to the printer over your network?

Okay. The problem is partially solved.

I used the link that usafveteran provided and I was able to find, and print to, the printer on my PC from my laptop.

    But wait ...

After a couple of successes it then started to give me the message :

    Spooler SubSystem APP

Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I rebooted the laptop but still get the same message.

It says that the print spooler is not started; but when I go to services.msc it says that the print spooler is running and starts automatically. I refreshed and restarted the service but continue to get the same messages.

I tried the fix on both computers and they both say there is no problem. I tried the automatic fix so now I will try the step-by-step and see what happens. I figured the autofix would be better to try first as they say that doing this manually could have dire results if it is not done correctly.

    Wish me luck.

That seems to have done it!

    Thanks!

Now to try to get the netbook using Win 7 to connect. I know not a lot about Win 7.

    <sigh>

    ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED

There is a very good tutorial HERE for compatibility between Windows XP and Windows 7.

    Thanks to all.
