    Hey there,
I was hoping you guys could clarify something for me please ?

    I currently have a Thomson TG585 V7 modem / router ( G ? ).

The main PC is cable connected and has Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 motherboard.
1 PC has Tenda W54P wireless adapter.
    1 PC has D-Link DWA-510 wireless G adapter.
1 Laptop, Toshiba Satelite 300 (not sure what it's got).

I'd like to change the modem / router to a :
    Belkin F5D8636-4A version 1001 ( N ).

I've got a sneaking suspicion that I'm going to have to change the existing or add new adapters to the PCs to get this to work but I thought I'd check on here first.

    Can you help ?

    Thanks.

It shouldn't need anything unless you want to add wireless to the one PC. The router is backwards compatible with older wireless versions.

You will want to do a firmware update on that router.

Thank you so much, you've just made my day. :dancer

I had myself convinced that this was going to be a nightmare.

    Hey Handygal,
Could I check something else with you if you've got a minute ?

I was just reading a post in a different thread where you said that modem / routers can't run multiple speeds at the same time so it would work on the slowest. ( sorry, paraphrasing :-o ).

So, in order to get the most out of the new modem ..........

    1. It would be better to upgrade the cards in the other 2 computers to N ?

    2. The main PC would still be wired but may need a new card installed if it's not N compatible ?

    3. What on earth do I do with the laptop ? :confused

Sorry if some of the terminology is incorrect, networking is something I'm not that familiar with.

    Thanks.

    It gets a little complicated.

Are you changing your router to take advantage of a system that has a wireless N card?

There is a little figuring to do to see if it's worth the time and expense to change things.

Do you have any other wireless devices? A network compatible blu-ray player, Roku, gaming console, kindle/nook?

Do you usually have multiple systems turned on and connected to the net at the same time?

What type of connection/speed do you have?

Do you have speed issues with the current router?

The very simplest would be to find a smart router that can run more than one speed concurrently. I'll do a little research since I've been wondering the same thing. I have a feeling they are going to be pretty pricey but it's worth a look.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this.

    Ok, here goes.

    No other wireless devices used.

The 3 PCs get used at the same time a lot.
The laptop doesn't get used that much, maybe once or twice a week.

    Currently on Broadband 1500K.

No speed issues with the current modem / router but we've been having drop outs in the service for the last couple of months.
Usually around 6 times a day but never for more than a couple of minutes.

The guy came out and checked the lines yesterday and he agrees that it's probably the modem at fault.
ISP is sending a new modem as this one is still under warranty, I won't know what that is until it gets here sometime within the next week.

The Belkin was given to me by a friend, brand new and supposed to be much better as far as signal etc.

So I guess I can use either but would prefer to use the better one if possible.

I would take the free modem and the free router and run! Unless you are streaming a lot of doing a lot of downloading or file sharing or are working far away from the router, I wouldn't buy Wireless n receivers to split 1.5Mbps up 3 ways. I you are maxing out the 1.5 all day then maybe, but it probably isn't work the money, the time or the effort to install and configure them.

Out of curiosity, i might disconnect all the computers and run the one wireless N alone just to see if it excites me. I predict that you won't see much difference.

My disclaimer: I just retired my W2K workstation this summer and currently am using XP exclusively! My advise is probably colored by my tendency to only change what is proven to benefit (or is broken) rather than to upgrade regularly.

    I understand perfectly. :)

My last PC was about 8 yrs old and still going strong.
I was forced to upgrade it for a course I wanted to do.

As for the modem, I think I get what you're saying.
Will give the Belkin a try and see how it goes.

Thanks again for all of your help, it's greatly appreciated.
