    Hi,

I've been having a problem with my mouse freezing for some time. It's fine on start up, it happens when the computer is unattended for a while. It completely freezes but will come back to life after a while. This can take 20 mins or so which means I usually shut down in frustration. I'm currently using a cordless mouse but the problem was already present when I got this mouse. The drivers are working and there doesn't appear to be any other problems.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

    Greetings, foxyloxy.

    A few quick questions:

What operating system and Service Pack # are you using? What's the make and model # of your computer?

Do the same symptoms occur while in Safe Mode (presuming you're using Windows)?

Do you have any sort of screen saver, sleep, or hibernate modes enabled?

    Hi Caliban,

Thanks for the reply. We are uusing Windowss Vista Home Premium, service pack 2. The computer is a Mesh Elite Nero XMCT.

The problem doesn't occur in safe mode interestingly which I guess rules out a problem with the drivers? I didn't mention that when the mouse comes back to life, there is a 'bing' sound! We don't have a screen saver, sleep, or hibernate modes enabled.

    I hope you can help.

    Thanks,

    Jane

Caliban's suggestion and it not happening in safe mode actually points towards drivers or device conflict or maybe an acceleration issue.

Try abekl's link, esp. #3 of the hardware portion and all of the Software section. That pretty much covers walking through those sorts of issues. I don't think cleaning the mouse or changing the batteries is going to apply. Video acceleration might, but try the other fixes first.

It might be interesting to open the task manager, go to the processes tab and sort by CPU use. Then try to get it to freeze with that open. It might show what process is getting stuck. I would try the fixes first though.

Actually, the fact that the issues don't present while in Safe Mode could indicate that there may very well be a driver problem. You might try uninstalling any software related to the mouse, reboot, and see if Windows loads its own generic mouse drivers and if your symptoms change.

EDIT: ah, handygal! Didn't see you lurking there - good suggestions! ¦)

I didn't want to jump in on your solution but I just couldn't help myself.

You jump any time you feel froggy! ;)

Have to watch out for these 'mouse freezes' - often, they turn out to be completely non-mouse related. That 'bing' sound might point to some software being activated - again, a check of all processes, startup programs, etc., might prove fruitful.

I was thinking the same thing about the freezes. The mouse is a symptom but i haven't had it as a cause yet. Usually i can still move the mouse when a process gets stuck at 100% -- lately it's been firefox, stupid thing -- or the mouse disappears. I have had the mouse freeze but it's been too long for me to remember why. I know it was not a mouse issue though.

foxy, that doesn't pinpoint anything for you yet, but if you can get it freeze with the processes open. Maybe Caliban can recommend some programs that help clean up startup programs and registry errors that can contribute to freezes. I use ccleaner found Here but I can't say how much it would help this situation.

Spot on with the CCleaner - very diverse program, and reliable.

    Couple of other thoughts:

    1. Mouse related: Is this a USB mouse? If so, you might look in your advanced power options, make sure no 'suspend USB' settings are enabled, although this seems unlikely since the issues disappear in Safe Mode. You might also take a look in BIOS, fiddle around with any available USB or Legacy USB settings.

    2. Non-mouse related: Along with checking the processes and startups, maybe open Event Viewer, check for any entries at or near the time of the freezes.

Thanks for your help. I've just tried Calibans suggestion and uninstalled mouse drivers. I'll see what happens now. I'll let you know. Thanks again.

Tank you so much Caliban and Handygal. After deleting and re-installing the drivers the problem appears to be cured!!!!
