a few days ago i was having problems with my computer and i suspected a virus and i couldnt take care of it myself.so i brought it to tegh local computer shop and later that day he said he cleaned it of all viruses and malware/spyware.now im trying to find pictures in one of my folders and they are all gone.i discovered this a little bit ago when i loaded 4 new pics into that folder directly from my digital camera, and i went to view them, and only those 4 were there along with a file entitled''3288.exe.vir''.someone please tell me my thousands of pictures arent deleted!

oh,im using windows xp.i dont know what other helpful info i can put up to pinpoint my problem but i truly hope someone can help.im not very tech savvy so when things like these happen i feel violated

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
I'm sorry but this is not something we can answer for you since you did not come here to do your malware removal. We have no idea what the PC repair shop did. Why aren't you asking them what they did to your pictures and whether they made a backup before deleting them?

Are you sure they are not just in another folder somewhere?

Either way this is not really an issue for the Malware Forum. If you need to attempt file recovery, you will need to post in the Software Forum.

im asking because i know little to nothing about computers.why i havent asked the shop is because its evening and i need help now.i would also like to become more knowledgeable about things as i go so i dont have to pay to have a shop do it.i felt it was related to malware removal since he did a malware removal, and since then now the pics are gone and other folders are messed up.and no they arent in another folder

Malware does not normally remove your pictures. Is there malware that could infect pictures? Yes of course but it is not something frequently seen. If they were all infected, it would make sense for the person to have told you this and also they should have been move to somekind of quaranine folder. If they are really no where around and not even in a quarantine, you will have to try and run a recover program to see if you can get anything back ( not a topic for this forum ). Do note that the more you use and the more things you install/add to your PC, will make it more and more likely that less data can be restored. I suggest you check out the below and post in the Software Forum for help with data recovery:

    Recuva Portable

Or the full free version from here >>http://www.piriform.com/recuva but this version does need to be installed which could also cause some data to be lost since delete file clusters could be overwritten.

If at some point you want to check your PC for malware ( not recommended until you have restored or at exhausted data recovery steps ) then you can run the below cleaning procedure
