Good Ol' RPGs

I'm looking for a new old RPG to get stuck into. While I say 'old' that isn't necessarily a requirement, but I'd actually prefer something that isn't resource hungry and won't prevent me from having conversations while playing (which I find pretty impossible with just about any first-person game!).

    Games I loved
    Diablo II
    Dragon Age Origins
    * Everquest
Exile 3 + Blades of Exile (anyone else played this?)
    FFVII
    FFVIII
    Morrowwind
    * Oblivion
Soleil (Sega Genesis / Mega Drive)
    * Note: These games are first-person so would work for me now anyway

    Games I didn't
    Fable
    World of Warcraft
    Titan Quest
    Silver
God of War II (sorry but this is just Not an RPG!)
Baldur's Gate (I won't win any friends for writing that, but a few things really bugged me like having a party rather than a single character, and my pick of Bard being absolutely useless! Hmm... I probably need to give Baldur's Gate a second chance huh...)

I know these 'what games would I like?' questions can be annoying, but I hope someone might name a few classics that slipped me by. Also while I really would prefer PC games I do have access to Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES, and N64.

    I don't recall Everquest being first-person perspective... :p

    Anyways. List of suggestions:

Lord of the Rings Online (Like EQ but way better, and with ring-wraiths)
    Torchlight
    The Witcher
    Neverwinter Nights 2
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (patch, patch, patch!)
Knights of the Old Republic, and its sequel Sith Lords
    Jade Empire
    Deus Ex

maybe also overlord 1 and 2 is a suggestion..
also sacred 1 and 2 is worth to mention
assassins creed 1 maybe but im not sure of that a RPG is.:-o
venetica is lots of fun and you have also fallout 3 and new vegas.
but for starters i must highly recommend KOTOR 1 and 2.
Mimsy said that one already but it is one of the best games ever made!:-D

I don’t know that I would count Assassins Creed as an RPG, it's more of an action adventure. It's a good game though,, well worth playing. :)

I almost forgot to say,if you're going to give BG a second chance, do yourself the favor of really reading the manual. Don’t just skim it, actually study the thing. The game is based entirely on pure AD&D 2nd edition rules and they are brutally unforgiving to the novice.

Torchlight was meant to be in my don't like list! I really liked/like Diablo I and II, but I really didn't like the clones for some reason. Also Everquest is too a first-person perspective - you could scroll out but very few people I met played it that way. Deus Ex 1&2 is such a fantabulous game and I can't believe I didn't list that in my games I love section. System Shock 1&2 too actually. I did work through and complete Neverwinter Nights 1 but it was painfully linear - is NWN2 that much better?

I had never heard of Jade Empire, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and Venetica so I'm looking forward to tracking those down thanks!

You're right about Baldur's Gate. From what I rememeber I mostly got annoyed by it because I set it up to be especially hard and then suffered the consequences. I found myself as a bard with no songs left to play, my party had argued, split in two and abandoned me, and I was out in the sticks having decided to go find my own quests.

I remember wishing I had Secrets of Mana after playing in on a friends computer way back in the day, so I will most definitely dig that one up! Chrono Trigger looks great too, thanks abz1nthe.

So far the list to look up in no particular order:
    Baldurs Gate
    Jade Empire
    Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
    Venetica
    Secrets of Mana (SNES)
    Chrono Trigger (SNES)

No problem! they are two of my favorite rpg's of all time and I bet you'll get a lot of enjoyment and playtime out of them both :cool

Also not necessary a true rpg but The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, is another great game on the SNES that kind of borders on rpg/adventure.

I'm one of the ones who scrolled out... I solo'ed a lot, so I liked being able to see what was going on all around me. ;)

NWN2 is everything that Dragon Age could and should have been. It was developed by Obsidian, so it's a bit buggy and community patches are your friends, but the story and characters, and the influence you can have on them through conversations, is astounding and one of the best RPG experiences ever.

ChronoTrigger was groundbreaking for its time, and to an extent still is, because of the many many different endings you can get. It almost invented the concept of replay value. Also, the characters are great. Give my love and best regards to Frog when you meet him... he will always have a special place in my heart. :)

I would scroll forward and back depending on the situation so I can definitely understand that. I was on Bristlebane as a ranger.

NWN2 is definitely added to my list then. I really loved Dragon Age and easily made my top 10 RPGs, so if a game can be similar but better, then I can't wait to play it.

I discovered I actually already had Secrets of Mana that I'd got in a large bundle of old games and simply hadn't noticed, so I started that. So far it's suffering from linearity though that might just be because I'm so early into it. Soooo I went and got Witcher and have just finished installing that :).

Good choice. The Witcher is an awesomely awesome game. :)

HUGE fan of the Zelda games. Now I'm going to have to dust off my old NES and SNES to play some of the older ones.

Gonna have to read back on this thread, too, to learn more about some good old fashioned RPGs. Curse my older brothers for making me like those games so much! ;)

    Dragon Warrior was fun!

    So was Ultima. Good games...

I've never played the one you just posted. Hmm...

You can always go here and have a look-see... ;)

If I remember right, the dragon warrior games are the ones that became Dragon Quest, which automatically makes them awesome.

Also OP, for your old consoles you should check out the Breath of Fire games as well.

Well I'm loving The Witcher. It's very similar to Oblivion, which is nothing but a good thing. My irritations with the game keep evaporating so it's too early to say which is my favorite of the two - I didn't like that there were no wild plants, and then they added them; I didn't like the painfully simple combat system, and then they added more depth to it; etc. Currently I'm wishing for a wide open area to explore (a la Oblivion) and more inventory room, though no doubt those are around the corner too.

I'm saving the rest of the RPG suggestions so I can play those later. Thanks for all the posts guys!
