New members and Titles:

This is in response to a member who questioned their status.

To all new members who question their status, let me state this:

"The "Title's" are automatic with the number of posts you have made. Let me just say this to you. One of our malware fighters came to this site a few years ago with about as much knowledge as you currently have. With guidance and many questions, she is now a very well respected Malware fighter!! Most of the members here started out where you are. Thru time and dedication to learning, they have now become people who are helping. When I first signed up here, I was as dumb as a rock. Give yourself a break. Read threads that interest you. Take your time and ASK questions!! No question is stupid. No one will fault you on your level of knowledge. Titles mean nothing. Keep asking questions and I may at some point change your "Title" to "Future Geek"!!;)"

Reading the threads and any PC related magazines or articles I could get hold of is how I learned.
Did lots of that before going "hands-on" trying to work on mine before starting on my friends.
They used to know more than me, but by now, they come to me for assistance.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Good point, and I think the same applies to post count. I've seen new members, both here and in other forums, assume that if other, established members have hundreds or thousands of posts, they must be experts, which we all know is not necessarily true.

I've seen lounge lizards in forums who have 10,000 posts, 99% of which are useless, and I've seen technical snipers with 50 posts that hit the bull's eye, every time.

It's the content that matters - not the number.

    Amen brother Caliban :)

Dont know how this thread started and what question was so important to raise but it really worries me that a title or postcount is so important to worry about and question! I think if you do then maybe you need to re-evaluate if this forum is for you.

  5. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

I think it depends on the title... I like my title, because TimW gave it to me when I was joking about being the Imperial Queen of the gaming forum, but all joking aside, that is where I spend a lot of my time here on MGs and where I post the most (aside form the Lounge). So I'm proud of my custom title and see it as a big compliment that someone would think I deserve it, even as a joke, and I think some others who have been given custom titles probably feel the same way. :)

Post count on the other hand... I don't need no stinking post count! :p

  6. jarcher

    jarcher I can't handle a title

    *note*

Occasionally, out of humor or honor (usually the former), custom titles are given by administrative personnel who see the member worthy of title. Requesting custom titles is not effective and therefore not an option.
You wife isn't here, no begging. :-o

The request will only be ignored.

I knew I forgot to add something important...! Asking for custom titles is a really good way to make sure you never get one. It's like begging to become a moderator, that never works either. ;)

Actually, it was raised privately when a new member felt they should be demoted for not having the level of knowledge that they felt went along with their title. ;)

Hope you set them straight, Tim.
Nobody knows all the answers because of how everything keeps changing.
Everybody is always asking about something,no matter their title or level of expertise.
May know lots about programs, but nada about hardware for example.

Mmmm dunno how to answer that one and thanks for the PM (cleared this up, although I read it 3 days later, dont ask been busy as hell with a forthcoming meeting).

The ranks are fun and mean nothing, so to anyone that thinks they mean something, dont read into them too much, you can know alot about specific subjects and then nothing on another, be that computing or needlepoint!

While I may know a bit about specifics in computing, say Windows Desktop, I know not that much on networking, then while I know alot about Angiogenesis and ARMD I know nothing about heart surgery!

We all have our strong a week areas of knowledge and thats what makes a forum great a collective amount of knowledge bases, which likely cover many areas.

Plus titles can change on a whim, never know I may get bored or mind numbed in the middle of a lecture on Thur or Fri and decide to change a few ;) :-D

  13. motc7

    motc7 Vice Admiral (Starfleet)

    Request normal title back.

Aside from the off topic areas where we are all full of crap, lol, in the other threads, I think my title is making me not as credible in the help threads.

Minor Geek rank request please....that was my rank before my metamorphisis.

So basically, we have no provision for a situation when said title affects one's credibility in troubleshooting or providing assistance?

Look I had no problem with it really, but I seriously have reason to believe that when I post suggested actions of late in non OT areas, that my title is putting some off.

I wouldn't worry about it. David is at a conference and it will no doubt bring him to a few pubs during his stay in London. You can probably expect that after a few drinks he will change it again. roflmao

Just remember, you wanted to be known as our Overlord. :major

You guys are lucky to have the titles that you do as they're obviously made in jest but my title is damn hard to live up to.. It was given to me in a totally unrelated untech thread by AS in the vein of 'I don't care about my post count'.

In consequence, it has made me a better helper as I don't Google as much, most is based on experience. I could have posted a bit more with wild guesses though I'm perfectly fine where I am. If I don't know then I don't post.:)

(This is not aimed at any resident MG rats here.;))

    I would agree,I can be an annoying little smartass:-D I can't help it :(

    I only post at about 20% smartass,since I'm 100% smartass I just don't post the other 80% smartass replies I have for every single thread I read:-D

Its not easy being a pure bread smartass-

Hmm, 5 references to 'smartass' and two for 'Deeply' in that post. I think you have a title demotion in the works as TimW has a lot of fodder here.:-D However, he's an admin so he censors himself more than %80 of the time.:p:-D

I have never ever seem anyone in a forum thread here or on many other forii a comment from someone looking for advice and not taking it because of a members title, so without actual comments in a thread I dont believe "a" title is putting them off and in your last 50 posts on the forum and from when the title/s where changed your reply posts in the tech areas number 8 (some just commentary) BUT that said its not a post scoring thing here at majorgeeks and you likely know this already as Tim (MA) has said many a time postcounts mean jackshit!

You could have a postcount of 5 and all 5 posts are correct, or you could have 1000 which are debatable, I have 30K and not all are tech posts and those that are I would imagine that they may fix 50% of the issues, we can never all be 100% right, too many variables but a good reply with as much info as possible with download links (if applicable) to help a member fix their issue will always shine out to new/old members as a quality post, NO matter what your postcount or title.

So I dont not think that a title is putting anyone off and would doubt that a member posting a question has PM'd you to say "I'm not going to use your answer to my question as your title is Overlord of B.S"

Having said all this and thankfully I didnt read the forum or this thread much when I was in London or more so in the bar @1am or a whole title group could have been changed to something less desirable ;) :-D

I have reset your user title if it means so much, but cannot say that randomly it maybe not changed in the future by someone else, but I will leave it alone, but I do reserve the caveat of if you start a thread on postcount or your title *as well as touting for thanks in posts* I may change it, because it shows a need for some sort of status thing..... have to know its all fun in titles.

Bill Just noticed that post of yours, I would never have you as unreliable at all, so please do not think of not posting in tech areas as your advice on hardware is always great.

Hahahahaha thought you would like that as it still in the theme of your user name.

I love the custom titles, sometimes I'll go looking for why someone has a new one -- funny stuff.

Tim, you're a good sport for not changing your own title and picture back. I was ducking with one eye open waiting for that fall-out.

If that truly is the case, that's a great loss for MGs. :( You are one of the ones I learned a lot from when I started out here. And at the same time, if you feel that is thb case that's all the more reason for all of usto tip our hats to you in a gesture of respect.
