I have an elderly machine with a QDI KinetiZ 7b/e motherboard which has a VIA VT8363A Apollo KT133A chipset (4GP 4x/2x for a socket A processor) and an AMD Athlon 1.1 Ghz processor. Three SDRAM sockets each with 512MB. OS is Windows XP.Can I upgrade the processor and, if so, to what degree.
Have spent some time on Google but cannot seem to find the answer.
    Many thanks for any help.

    Greetings, radleydm.

From what I've been able to find, you should be able to upgrade to an Athlon XP 2000+. Theoretically, any Socket A (Socket 462) with a 133/266mHz FSB, should work, but I think you're probably limited by other factors to the 2000+.

Still, 1.667gHz is a pretty good boost from 1.1gHz. ;)

    Bom dia Caliban
Many thanks for your help and the link. The Comments in that link are very encouraging so I will go ahead and replace the 1.1 processor.
My first post on this forum (have been with Dr. Keyboard for years but now not so active) and most encouraging.

The 'best' Athlon to use would be the Mobile version of the 2000+ ... if you can find one; more cache so it's a little more responsive but make sure you set it for full speed in the BIOS.

Thank you all and sorry for the delay.
Was not able to find a mobile version of the 2000+ so I bought an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ AXDA2000 1.67GHz CPU on eBay but could not get it to work. Pulled the jumper on the MB to allow 266MHz, flashed the BIOS to the latest I could find (version 3.8 LCP) and altered the BIOS to 133MHz but no success. Then bought an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1.53GHz AXDA1800DLT3C which is running fine at 1461 MHz. Is there much noticable difference between this and 1.667 MHz?
Do I consider the XP2000 to be "dead" or is it that the MB will not accept anything over the XP1800?
Have looked for an updated BIOS but Legend.QDI no longer seem to have a website - out of business?
    Thanks for any advice.

I do not believe that I would bother the BIOS unless somebody with more knowledge than myself gives the OK.
Un-needed flashing of the BIOS has a very bad habit of destroying a machine.

Mathematically? Yes - 206 Hz. Realistically? Probably not, at least to our un-calibrated eyes and reflexes.

Could be a dead processor - only way to really tell is to try it in another system.

I'd lean more towards motherboard, though, and as you've discovered, finding a more recent BIOS flash could prove problematic, if indeed one exists.

Helpful. Thanks. Will stay with the 1800+ I think.
