Bartering: Is the IRS watching it yet?

    Hi All.
I anticipate that alot of folks will be bartering in the future as the economy continues downhill. I know there was alot of interest in bartering in the 1980''s. I am wondering if the IRS has any rules in regard to bartering? It seems to me that people agreeing to do each other favors should be a private matter.

Pretty darn hard to track bartering. It is not a taxable sale as it is a swap for goods / services on an equal basis. There is no taxable gain on the trade.

Speaking from experience the taxman would be the least of your concerns. Ten years ago my employers were involved in a transnational barter scheme and I was being paid my overtime in trade dollars.
Short version of the story is that spending those trade $ was more work than I put into making them.
Barter always looks good when money is short, but frankly after you've done it for a short while you understand why we invented money.

Gregory, I don't question that money is better. But I wonder how we will pay off our 14 trillion debt, and what will happen to the dollar's value. :(

I would never barter. I love to pay my share of sales taxes. It is a duty and an honor to pay my taxes. I see this as a potential HBT type thread. My post is just meant in jest. :-D

One of my favorite Economists told me this: "Briefly: What something costs to produce doesn't alone determine it's price.
There's a demand side as well."

Or, "you ask for what you want, and you pay for what you get."
    What does HBT mean?

HBT stands for Hot Button Topic. A section we used to have to discuss political/controversial things. The mods/owners of the site decided to get rid of it.

I did not know that. I have only just started visiting the site after a couple years away. When I did visit it was only to get software help. Perhaps I shouldn't be posting political type things here then? Some guidence from the moderators?

    Hi

Political, Religious etc topics never tend to go well on tech forums and we did trial a hot topics forum area, but it just caused issues between members (some ended up banned) ..... so as there are many a political, religious forum on the internet its best to use those for contentious issues.

Not being critical, but I wish someone would have told me. I understand your viewpoint. The economy and bartering are political, and that can be contentious. I wouldn't have posted about those had I known, and I won't post on those threads again. The reason I made the posts is because I am interested in what the future holds for all of us in these troubled times. I posted here cause you "geeks" are some of the smartest people I have come across, and I like hanging out with you. But I am not computer savy enough to be a geek, not by a longshot. My education is in English/medical. Feel free to let me know if I make any other mistakes.:)

    Quoting DavidGP:
Some organisations look for negative commentary about their operations and join in. Just to, you know, give some balance to the conversation.
They aren't usually malicious but they can become tedious with their "Gee I LOVE this company/product!!! I've never heard of anyone having your problem with it" routine.
The firm I didn't name above has done this on a few different forums and basically they keep showing the happy face until everyone else goes quiet.

Don't worry. The mods will let you know if you cross a line. Personally, I have found other places to discuss politics. I can't speak for the mods or the owner, but I suspect some discussion might be OK in the lounge, but would most likely be shut down if it went very far.

    Hi Sheena

No great feedback comments and we could post a thread on topics that should not normally be posted on this forum, but in the end it would not be read anyway and the topics would be posted, we know this logic due to having a Read and Run me guide for malware removal first steps in our malware forum as a sticky but many do not follow it.

Indeed the future in these times is a open ended one not only financially but of late a geopolitical one of destabilisation (not going down that area as its a minefield) and while I made that comment its more of a try not to open too many of the same ilk topics, but its not to say do not post topics of interest but just be weary that some maybe closed or more likely removed.

While we do not have the Hot Topics area anymore, we are aware of and I know I do watch threads and will give alot of lattitude to the content and comments posted so long a the thread sticks to the topic and has good debate and not too wildly off topic, with no attitude towards other members because of their beliefs, have to agree to disagree at times in a debate.

Dont worry on not being a "geek" you likely are in the medical area "medical geek" and thats what makes Majorgeeks unique in many forums is the cross section of membership, not just ages, knowledge/expertise but geo-location. This is why we try and curb religious and political topics, as what maybe good for one set of members (say country location of religious beliefs) it may not be to others, so to keep a happy family these topics are monitored.

Also as we like a vast mix of users from novice to pro techie, and the non techie, its be best practice to stick to no controversial threads so that when new users are looking for a forum for answers on topics tech wise and non tech (as we did add soem non tech forum areas, not utilised as much as I would like) to cater for a wide member base.

So do not ever fear of posting what you feel, if its borderline, one of the admin team is likely to remove it and just give you a quick Private Message to explain, but we do give as much as possible some leaway to topics.

*but on your topic of the IRS and bartering, dont know your IRS rules well enough but coming from the HMRC (UK revenue service) point of view, I dont think that they will likely curb any bartering as its gone on your millennia and will continue in that if you can say fix a computer but your neighbour cannot pay but they pay in say vegetables that they grow then thats not going to gain the eagle eye of the taxman, they could not inforce that as no monies are changing hands.

Also as we all haggle for discount on goods you are then only paying tax on what you pay, now they could introduce a system whereas you still pay the amount of tax that you would have paid on the RRP/Sticker value and not the haggled/bartered price.

You'd have to explain all that to me as I didnt understand any of it in relation to the quoted text you had from my post, I'm afraid.

    Indeed Fred,

David, I was only saying that there are all sorts of reasons for watching what you say in the forums ;).
