    I originally posted this problem in another link with the same trouble.
    But here is the story. I decided to update Java to the latest version and heard that I should delete the previous version first. I went to the java update site and a box on the left of the page gave an option to delete older versions. It didn't work, half way thru a prompt popped up saying: error 2753 regutils. That's all it said and now I'm unable to install java because it gets to the same spot with the same prompt. After that, I tried to uninstall the older version with Add/Remove function in windows, I tried java ra, revo unistaller and fix java in the safe mode. I was finally able to get all references of java removed for the machine even cleaning out the registry and also all visible references to regutils.dll. Still this regutils.dll error pops up each time I try to install a new java. I've done searchs and I can't find regutils.dll anywhere. What does it do and why can't I find it on the machine? I don't know what else to do I am now without java on the machine, I don't really need it so much but I would like to find the solution to this problem. Sorry this story is so long guys but I wanted to get the problem explained.
    I have a Dell xps 420 with windows xp and sp3 service pack and all the latest updates installed. I also have a windows 7 machine with java installed perfectly but I don't like win 7 very much it's too hard to configure the way I want it.
    Thanks for anything you guys can do to help me. I would be very grateful.

    Here's the bug from Sun
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6645033
    Looks like it has been around for a long time. We're at 24 and someone had trouble going from 10 to 11.

    If you can't fix it using the steps listed, don't worry about it. I have removed JAVA from most of the computers in the house (we currently have 7 of our own). It is one less thing I have to worry about patching.

    Thanks for your reply plodr. I had already went to that site and read everything there without understanding any of it :confused
    Anyway it seems that bug will be there forever and as you said and I did also we can live without Java. It doesn't seem logical that a company can't fix their own bugs but on the other hand look at microsoft.
    Thanks a lot for your help and reassuring me it's not a big deal.

    I just in the last couple days I've had problems with installing and uninstalling Java. Had the same error. Internal error: 2753 regutils.dll when trying to uninstall using Revo. Then when trying to reinstall I got the "You already have the current version of Java, do you want to reinstall (Y/N).

    I finally got mine fixed.

    Thanks for replying and I'm happy you got your problem fixed. I tried that and it didn't work for me though, I still get the same thing with regutils.dll. I'm not going to worry about it anymore. Anything that buggy I don't really need.

    I removed all Java installations that are visible through the Uninstall, cleaned up all any remnants in the registry using CCleaner, etc., but continued to have this problem. BUT, CCleaner did show me one thing in its Tools/Uninstall page - the existence of Java Update 17 even though I couldn't find any installation in any of the usual locations, and of course CCleaner couldn't uninstall it either.

    Some sleuthing using RegEdit, the problem it turns out, well at least for me, seems to be happening because of the existence of Java Update 17 kit in the SysWOW64 cache. I found this by searching for 'Update 17' in the registry and it pointed to an entry like this in my case:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\4EA42A62D9304AC4784BF238120671FF\SourceList]
    "PackageName"="jre1.6.0_17.msi"
    "LastUsedSource"="n;1;C:\\Windows\\SysWOW64\\CCM\\Cache\\BOS000D4.1.System\\"

    You could have something similar to this in your registry as well, may be the classid (4EA42A62D9304AC4784BF238120671FF) could be different.

    I just backed up the following registry entry, and deleted it from regedit:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\4EA42A62D9304AC4784BF238120671FF]

    Restarted installation of 32bit JRE, and VOILA it worked!

    Hope that helps.

    My env:
    win 7 prof - 64bit with SP1.
    Java - both 32 and 64 bit J2SE 1.6.0_24

    Thanks osmojones for that suggestion and I searched for it on my machine but couldn't find it. I had already searched the registry with regedit and deleted all references to java. I have gone thru all files and everything on the machine deleting anything java and the regutils things but nothing works. I'm happy you found your problem but I'm not going to worry about having java anymore.
    Thanks a lot man.

    FYI,

    For those who are having issues updating to the latest Java update, the problem could be caused by a corrupted older version. Normal attempts to uninstall don't seem to work and even though Java is not showing up in windows Add/remove programs there seems to be remnants still in the registry. This is a nifty program written to take care of those registry entries.

    This is an awesome tool and works! I tried uninstalling, scrubbing the registry, etc. and nothing worked. I've been working on Windows machines since 3.1 so I know how to fix things and could not get the Java Error 1723 resolved. I installed this tool and it fixed it in 2 minutes. Thank You!
