I have an HP a1700n PC running XP pro. I tried to install a Galaxy GeForce 8400 GS 512MB card but messed it up. I contacted tech support and they told me to disable my onboard video... so I did. The new card still didn't work because the drivers weren't loaded. Now I have no video. When I try to open in safe mode I get as far as the list of drivers and assume it doesn't see a video driver so it stalls. Anything you can do to help me?

Do you have an XP CD to boot from?

Technically, you should still get some video without drivers. Basically, very large fonts like in safemode. I know it sounds obvious but is your monitor connected to the new card rather than the onboard video connector?

No I don't have a disc. I have the monitor hooked up to the on board video connector.

Try connecting the monitor to the card and see if you get basic video. It should run on VGA drivers and then find the drivers.

If that doesn't work then remove the card and try safe mode again to see if the card is causing Safe Mode to stop.

I've removed the new card and am trying to get the on board to work. I can't get it to open in safe mode.

Where did you disable onboard video--in BIOS or in Windows?

If disabled in Windows, what happens if you try to boot into normal mode?

Are you familiar with resetting the CMOS by changing the Jumper settings ?? Near the motherboard battery you will see a jumper that has 3 pins and the jumper will be on 1 & 2. move jumper to 2 & 3 wait for a minute then replace jumper to 1 & 2 again. If you are unsure take the little silver round battery out for 5 minutes then replace. Use your on-board graphics to connect monitor then boot your PC. Make sure ALL POWER IS OFF to computer before you attempt this and also ground/earth your self by touching a metal wash tap thus ridding your body of any static. Let us know the outcome.

In Windows. If I try to boot in normal mode it seems to boot fine... I just have no picture.

Do you have a choice on the Startup menu (F8) for VGA or low resolution mode mode? You could try that to see if it will display through booting Windows.

    ******
When you were installing your video card did you ever get any display on it? Particularly BIOS screens. Or has it never shown anything? (I'm wondering if you seated it firmly enough.)

no, I didn't see that option of low res or VGA.

I was able to get into the bios with the new card.

Thanks you very much for your help but I have given up and taken the machine to a repair shop. I will post back here what the trouble was if you're interested.
