    Good afternoon MajorGeeks!

Even though he typically knows better, my husband accidentally clicked on one of those damn fake XP anti-virus programs somewhere!

I've run the scans and things seem to be better at this point (the fake anti-virus seemed to be gone after MBAM), but since this is his work laptop, I would like you to scan my logs just to make sure everything is in the clear.

One note, I did make a mistake when running ComboFix - initially, I temporarily disabled the AV (should have permanantly disabled) - when ComboFix installed the Windows Recovery Console and rebooted the system, the AV came back on - I didn't realize this until it got to stage 8 (as you will probably see in the log, it got "access denied"). I immediately disabled the AV again and Combofix seemed to continue with no problems. Please let me know if you need me to run it again.

Logs are attached. As always, thanks for all of your assistance!

You have a few items that I am not familiar with, so unless you know what they are, delete them:
    Code:
    C:\Documents and Settings\swagner\Local Settings\Application Data\-0O]a)aM.,+T
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\-0O]a)aM.,+T
    C:\Documents and Settings\swagner\Templates\-0O]a)aM.,+T
    C:\WINDOWS\Czusua.exe
    Otherwise your logs are clean.

Tell me what malware issues you are still having, if any.

    Hi TimW!

I deleted the first 3 files in the list. Got to the 4th one ("C:\WINDOWS\Czusua.exe") and as soon as I right-clicked on it to delete it, Avast detected it as a trojan and quarantined it.

Not having any other malware issues that I can tell of at this time. :)

Please let me know if there is anything I should do in regards to the trojan that was apparently still hanging around according to avast.

As always, my sincere thanks for your assistance!

I'm pretty sure I'll be here several more times this week with new problem systems...I get most of my virus removal "jobs" via word of mouth, mainly at church. This morning after church I set up 4 different appointments this week to work on infected systems...two of them sound like they got the fake anti-virus as well...AYE!

    Thanks again!

    Good to know.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

    Great! Doing final steps now!

I just saw the new addition to the final steps (national chain virus removal price -vs- Majorgeeks) and I just wanted to clarify that when I say "jobs", I mean pro-bono! It would certainly not be fair to you folks for me to charge people when I'm using your FREE service. I take the occasional payment in trade, or a 5 or 10 dollar "tip" for gas money (I usually go right to people's homes or offices rather than bringing the system home), but I basically help people for free because I believe that the average PC user has the right to a clean system and education on keeping that system up-to-par - at minimal to no cost - this includes pushing free anti-virus software. So many people aren't even aware that there is free AV out there!

It pains me to see even my locally run PC shop "cleaning" computers for around 100 bucks - then many of these systems end up in MY hands because they aren't fully cleaned!

Thank you (and the whole team here) again for the valuable service you do! I'm sure I'll be back soon.

Well, thank you for telling us this. It sometimes happens that someone will use our services and then turn around and charge a client for out work. If we find this pattern, we usually will stop helping the person. We have absolutely no issue with someone doing it as you are. When the person is using our services for the above monetary gain, we tell them to have the actual computer owner join MG's and learn something by going through our procedures. :major

No problem! I just wanted to be honest about why I'm here all the time! I wish there was more I could do to give back to MajorGeeks. But, I do what I can locally to fight malware and help everyday folks keep their computers safe.

Anyways, I guess I'm eating up malware forum thread space with chit-chat now! Thanks again. :)

Not a problem. Do what you can to assist others in the other forums and just enjoy the company here on MG's. ;)
