    Hi and thanks Kestrel

    Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint
    File::
    c:\windows\Sys3390 SettingsCollection.bin
    c:\documents and settings\Lance Thompson\Application Data\Sys6925.Config Collection.sys
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{171DEBEB-C3D4-40b7-AC73-056A5EBA4A7E}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Run Ccleaner.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Now can you use windows update successfully?

  5. Chala

    Chala Corporal

    While running combofix with your commands, and after combofix after deleted files, my machine tried to shut down. The shut down screen stayed frozen for over 15 minutes I had to force a shutdown. So after booting up again combofix generated a log and it is attached.

    My windows updates are still not working properly. When I boot up I see the update notification icon trying to download the updates but the icon disappears shortly.

    I essentially just want a clean bill of health if you will so if and when I contact Microsoft about the issue they cannot tell me I must have malware or a virus. So if you can tell me my system is clean I will be happy with that. All requested logs are attached, thanks!

    Being that i have access to another computer today, i am here to report that my machine is stuck at the shutdown screen while running combofix at the time of this post. But this time i will leave it this way till i hear back from you. It just started at the time of time of this posting.

    Go ahead and manually reboot your system. You may get the Combo log once you reboot. If so, attach it and also tell us what issues you are still having. ;)

  9. Chala

    Chala Corporal

    Ok will get right back to you

  10. Chala

    Chala Corporal

    The bad thing with that (forced restart) is all the programs start again while combofix is still running.

  11. Chala

    Chala Corporal

    Ok, so logs are attached. The update notification balloon still pops on restart and seems like it's trying to download something then disappears. However when I go to the windows update site http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
    and I click the "Review your update history" link it clearly shows last Wednesday it did download and install some critical updates. Last Wednesday I definitely had the white smoke virus. So it appears I am getting critical updates at least. But again I just want to know if my system is clean. So I ask again, do I have a a clean bill of health from you? Thanks so much!

    Let's do the Combo fix once more.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    FireFox::
    FireFox-: ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\Lance Thompson\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\to7es434.default\
    FireFox-: Ext: WhiteSmokeToolbar: {52794457-af6c-4c50-9def-f2e24f4c8889} - %profile%\extensions\{52794457-af6c-4c50-9def-f2e24f4c8889}

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now attach the new Combo log.

    Not a problem but it is trying to shutdown again and it is stuck, shall i force a shutdown again?

  14. TimW

    TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

    Well, with it getting stuck, I am not sure we are going to be successful with removing it. Let's go a different route:

    We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. So do the below to save bookmarks:

    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.

    Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

    You will need to exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

    Start by uninstalling FireFox and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.
    After reboot, delete the below folders:

    C:\Documents and Settings\UserAccount\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

    where UserAccount is the actual user account name being used.

    Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
    Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

    Is FireFox working okay now?

    Re-run ComboFix so I can be sure it is finally gone.

  15. Chala

    Chala Corporal

    Re-run ComboFix with the same Kill all commands as you instructed above?

  16. TimW

    No. Follow my instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling FireFox. Then just run ComboFix. I want to see if the Whitesmoke is still reported.

    I see you Private messaged Tim regarding me not answering your thread? I replied to you last at just after 2pm my time. I had alot to do after that and then I had to go to work and do a shift! :) Just to let you know that this is a bulletein board not LIVE support. :)

    Click Start, Run, and copy and paste the below into the Run box and click OK.

    This should bring up your preferences file for FireFox in a notepad window. Look for lines containing the below information and delete the whole line where it appears.
    • Ext: WhiteSmokeToolbar: {52794457-af6c-4c50-9def-f2e24f4c8889} - %profile%\extensions\{52794457-af6c-4c50-9def-f2e24f4c8889}

    After deleting those lines, click File, and select Save. If you cannot save the file, close all browsers first before saving.

    Now close ALL browsers and then reopen one and see how things are working.

    Run Combofix again at this point.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    No Kestrel13... I Private Message Tim, before anyone responded to my thread, perhaps I was being impatient, however I unequivocally did not isolate you, or mention your name in any way shape or form. I merely thought my thread was missed. I am sorry if you misunderstood something, if you would like a copy of my personal message to him, you can PM me or just ask him.

    I am very aware this is not LIVE support and you volunteer your time, and I appreciate that.

    I am running MBAM at this time, do you want me to stop MBAM and proceed with your instructions be advised MBAM has found one infected file already.

    Ok, I did not see that White Smoke Toolbar entry in the note pad that came up.

    Firefox ran good but I still see White Smoke Toolbar in the toolbars section still. Also while running Mbam, the update notification balloon appeared and stayed for a long time till I ran combofix, then it disappeared again.

    Attached also is the Mbam log that TimW requested, along with combofix, MGlog.zip and the prefs.js log wont upload sorry so it won't be attached to show you.

    Please do ALL of the below exactly as written and do it in the order written ( no exceptions ).
    • Downloaded and save the current version of ComboFix.exe to your Desktop but do not run it. Get it here: combofix.exe
    • Download and save the current version of Mozilla FireFox to your Desktop but do not run this yet.
    • Uninstall Firefox by using Revo Uninstaller
    • Use Internet Explorer for now.
    • Reboot the machine.
    • Check for any left over folders such as:

      C:\Documents and Settings\(Your account name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla
      C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

    • Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    We can double check again for any left over firefox folders before running Reinstalling Firefox and running Combofix again.

    Kestrel13 i have to change the name to save it on desktop. Windows will not let me overwrite it without changing name. I am afraid if i change name it won't work, so i am deleting the orginal. If that is a problem tell me next time your on.

    Ok I followed your instructions to the letter, however I did find this C:\Documents and Settings\(Your account name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla, but the folder was empty. I still deleted it, then deleted it from recycle bin. As I stated above I had to delete the original version of combofix. That Revo uninstaller seems very thorough, attached is the MGlogs.zip as requested.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thanks TimW for your help as well. Sorry again for PMing you. I have to ask you something though, ComboFix when ran normally deletes unwanted files correct? So I am just curious, why don't you recommend users to keep and utilize this great program when they get infected. Even though they cannot read the logs or issue commands there might be a chance that they may rid there computer of infections and not have to ask you for help, lightening up your work load. Just curious.
