Freeze Up During AMD Video Driver Install

Hi all, this is my first post, so first I wanted to thank you guys for all the help I've gotten from this site previously by reading and looking around. My problem is that during an install of the newest AMD Graphics Drivers , specifically 11.4, and then I tried 11.2, during the install when the screen flickers black, it stays that way instead of popping back out of it as usual. I've never had a problem installing new drivers before so this is a new issue. I installed the C++ 2005 redistributable per AMD's FAQ, which was supposed to help with the hang up / freeze during install but to no avail. Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

PC Specs of Self Build:

-AMD Phenom II X4 965
-8 Gigs Corsair Dominator RAM 1333 mhz
-ATI 5850 1 Gig Graphics Card
-ASUS Crosshair IV Motherboard

A few quick background questions:

What operating system version and Service Pack # are you running?

What level of .NET framework is on your machine?

Have you tried to install the driver while in Safe Mode?

And, where are you getting these drivers?

 

Hey thanks for responding Caliban! Upon checking the Programs and Features section I see that I have .NET Framework 1.1 and .NET Framework 4 client profile. I don't know much about these, so I just listed both in case it matters.
My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and I'm running no service pack as I read that if its not listed that I don't have one. I acquired the driver from AMD's own website. I have tried to install the driver in safe mode, but to no avail, last time I tried I think it said something about missing a certain driver, which I'm assuming is because safe mode only loads certain drivers. Thank you again for all the help, I hope I can figure this out, as it would be terrible If I can never again install a new video driver =P

I can not see where you have been offered the driver version 11.4 ??, all I can find is the 11.2 version which was released 15/02/11, which can be downloaded from here...

download and run driver sweeper and remove all instances of the ati video driver i.e... run/analyze/clean ... then re-install from the link that i have given you.

Hi iain, the 11.4 can be found here http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst114earlypreview.aspx - its an early preview driver, but the main reason I d/led it is because its supposed to fix issues I'm having with Dragon Age 2. I tried to d/l 11.2 as well though, and had the same problem of the persistent black screen after the flicker change. I'll try driver sweeper and report back what happens.

 

Thank you thank you thank you iain! Driver sweeper did the trick! I bet its because the old ATI remnants were interfering with the new AMD Video Driver since AMD took over the reigns of doing the video drivers. After sweeping everything I reinstalled and it worked beautifully. Thanks to you iain and Caliban for responding so quickly =)
