Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 (MS Word specifically) is not able to run on my Windows 7 Laptop. Let me explain.

I have a home wireless network consisting of 3 computers.... an XP Desktop, VISTA Laptop and Windows 7 Laptop. The network works properly and I can view/update/change all files on any computer from any computer. MS Office 2007 is installed on all three computers.

However, MS Word does not run on the Windows 7 Laptop. It just hangs without opening. Excel works fine. I have run Microsoft Office Diagnostics several times and it always hangs on step 15 of 17 in the Setup Diagnostic test. I can't even uninstall the MS Office suite... except by using the Microsoft Fix it 50154. I have done this several times and re-installed several times. The same thing happens. MS Word will not open.

Also, when the MS Office suite is installed on the Windows 7 Laptop, I can not see/use the printers connected to the XP Desktop. I can see/update files on the Desktop (and the VISTA Laptop).... but can not print from my Windows 7 Laptop. I can print from the VISTA Laptop. When I uninstall MS Office (and before I re-install) from the Windows 7 Laptop, I have access to the printers. This is all very strange.

Windows and Avast Antivirus are up to date. I have run Malware Bytes and SUPER AntiSpyware. My system appears clean, and I have NO other issues. I've even run CHKDSK at start up several times.

Any help would be most appreciated.

it reads like word or office's supporting files for word may not be compatible with win 7. go to the properties/compatibilty tab of winword.exe and try running word in vista or xp mode.

I have to disagree. I use Word 2007 with Windows 7 and have had no problems and I'm sure many thousands of other users are also doing the same.

Two Service Packs have been released for Office 2007. Have you tried updating your installation with Service Packs?

Your Office 2007 software license agreement allows installing on 3 computers, right?

    Do Excel, Powerpoint launch o.k.?

If so, might be the Word template having issues.

    • close Word.
    • Goto this directory
    • C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
    • There is a file there called "normal.dotm" and you may see another one like it that has a tilde in the file name " ~" Delete both of them, and launch Word.

    Tell me if it's better?

After several more attempts uninstalling and reinstalling the Office Suite, MS Word briefly functioned. However, when I clicked on ANY ".doc" file, I would receive the following error message:

"There was a problem sending the command to the program"

The message would quickly be hidden and MS Word would open to a blank page. I could then correctly open any ".doc" file from within MS Word.

Then.... I rebooted and MS Word would hang.

Again I needed to uninstall and reinstall several times. It is now functioning properly, but will keep my fingers crossed the next time I need to reboot. If I hve no issues, my computers stay on 24/7.

During my numerous installs I tried various compatibilty modes to no avail. It is running in normal mode.

One more question. How do I check for the MS Office service pack updates??? There doesn't seem to be a way for checking updates solely for MS Office. Everything is packaged under Windows Updates, whch I have running as automatic.

usafveteran - Yes... licensed for three computers
motc7 - Never had a problem with PowerPoint or Excel. I didn't see your post until I reached this stage. Will try if this doesn't stay fixed.

    Thanks

I was hoping to give you a working link to the catalog. It is the best place to find the patches and updates. At this point all I am is frustrated. I fired up IE8 (I NEVER use IE and I now know why). The catalog site is in the trusted zone. It keeps telling me that I need activex enabled. It is and the status at the bottom is showing it is in the trusted zone and nothing is blocked on the page. grrrrr:banghead It simply refuses to display anything but "you must have activex enabled to view this page". :banghead

Open Word and click on the Office icon in the upper left corner of the Word window. In the panel that opens (shows New, Open, Save, etc., in left side), you'll see Word Options at the bottom edge of that panel. Click it. Click on Resources (last item on left column). At the bottom of that panel, you'll see "about Microsoft Office Word 2007" and, under that, you'll see any Service Pack installed, such as "SP2".

If that indicates you do not have SP2 installed, click the button on that top of the panel, the one named "Check for Updates".

Here we go again. After a reboot, due to a windows update, I can no longer open MS Word. Because there are no problems with Excel or Powerpoint, I'm VERY reluctant to conduct another uninstall and reinstall of the MS Office Suite. Maybe I'll just use OpenOffice as my word processor. If I do ever get MS Word open, I'll check on the SP installed. Meanwhile, I'll check the other two computers where MS Word functions properly and see if they have the lates SP. Thanks to all of you for your tips and suggestions.

You never responded to this. This reference should be helpful: http://www.pcdon.com/word-unstable-corrupted-normal-dot.html

You don't need to uninstall and reinstall the whole Office Suite; individual components can be selected for removal or re-installation.

A SP installation affects all components of MS Office. So, you can check in Excel or whatever. Whatever SP you see in one component will also appear the other components.

MS Office installed for the umteenth <grin> time. Windows 7 had its own update to SP1 last night, and SP2 has been installed for MS Office.

MS Word still will not open. Have deleted the 'normal' file from the Template directory several times, and tried different compatibility settings. Word WILL WORK if my computer is started in Safe Mode.

Sometimes when Win7 is running in normal mode, it'll indicate Word didn't run properly previously... and asks if I want to run Word in 'Safe Mode.' It still won't open.... only when the computer has been started in 'Safe Mode.'

Another strange and aggravating issue... is every time Word won't open, I am not able to access my network printer on another computer. For the short time I occasionally am able to open Word, I don't have a printer issue.

How can I uninstall just Word?? Under 'Programs & Features' in Win7 I am only given the opportunity of uninstalling “MS Office Home and Student 2007”... not individual programs.

Also, when I started my computer in Safe Mode, I ran 'MS Office Diagnostics' and it reflected no issues. When I run it in Normal Mode, it hangs in the last step (Setup Test).

    Thanks

Here's another suggestion, just a suggestion; no guarantee it will make any difference. Download, install, and run CCleaner's file cleaner and registry cleaner (get CCleaner Slim at http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_d4191.html). When you run its registry cleaner, backup your registry when prompted to do so. Then, have CCleaner fix, i.e. remove, all items the registry scan found. Run that scan again since a subsequent scan may find additional items; if any are found, remove again. Repeat the scan again until it finds no more items. I usually do the registry backup during the initial registry scan, but I don't repeat that for the subsequent scans since all these scans are executed during one CCleaner session. Let's see whether this makes any difference in Word's behavior.

I forgot to mention it, but I've done that a number of times... but tried it again to no avail. When I started Word after the registry clean, it asked if I wanted to run the repair tool. i answered 'yes'. After hanging for about 40 minutes I used task manager to end task.

    Plan B:

    > Backup all important files to an external medium
    > Use Recovery partition to format the hard drive and restore the system to its original configuration.
    > Get Windows Updates, including SP1
    > Install MS Office.
    > Get SP update for MS Office if it did not happen during Windows Updates.
    > Install other programs as needed.

WOW.... that's an undertaking for me. Maybe I'll try it this weekend. Fortunately, all my important files are stored within sub directories under documents... and are backed up on a regular basis to a flash drive. This will be my first attempt at something like this and have a few questions.

Although I utilize live.com for email and all my contacts are saved online, when I access my email from my home computer it's through a POP3 account. All email (including several other accounts) is downloaded and erased from servers. How do I save and restore these settings and email from the last few weeks.

There don't appear to be any restore points on my system, and I don't have any original Windows installation disks. Will they be required??? How do I use Recovery Partition??? Although I'm fairly computer literate, I've never had to conduct a full system restore or install... even dating back to the days of Comodore64 and DOS <grin>.

MS Office isues resolved after restoring laptop to orginal settings and re-installing all software... along with reloading all files that were backed up. A very eye opening and educational process to say the least. Have a few other technical issues (not with MS Office) which I need to research or post in another thread. Thanks for all the help, support and tips/suggestions.
