Hi hope you can help me out TimW from malware sent me over here. After removing some nasty malware from a friends computer I still cannot get a wireless connection I can however get a wired connection. Also the network connection always says connected with an excellent signal.

She has an Acer Aspire laptop running Win XP Home service pack 3, 32 bit OS.

I have checked her network adapters and they don't seem to have anything wrong with them any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. :)

You stated that you could get a connection when you were hard wired to "your" router. Is that correct? But you can't get a connection either hard wired or wirelessly through her router? Is that the case? If so, you have tried resetting her router to factory settings?

I haven't tried her router just my router. I have her computer at my house so haven't been able to check her router. And yes I can only get a connection when I am hard wired to my router but cannot get a wireless connection.

Do you happen to have a USB WiFi dongle? That would be one way to tell if it is the router or the NIC card.

Unfortunately I don't. Could it be the router though as it is working fine with my mac and 2 other desktops?

If other computers are accessing the router wirelessly, then it has to be her NIC card. USB dongle runs about $40. I am assuming it is a built in NIC card.

It's a time machine. Oh just a thought could it be because i don't have airport installed on her pc??? However I have never had that prob with other laptops.

oh it is what my mac and desktops use to manage my time machine. However I have never had to have it on a laptop.

Got it working! I found an update through windows update for her adapter and it seems to have fixed the wireless!! Also was able to fix the automatic updates Tim I just Start\run\regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll hit ok and was able to do updates and that dreaded automatic update warning went away. Thanks again just thought I'd let u know i got it all fixed up :wave
