Hi, as you can probably already tell I recently reinstalled my PC, well my friend reinstalled it for me. Anyways, he said it was good to go and I go to network connections, but my modem doesn't show up (my modem works perfectly). I tried creating a new network connection but as I go through the wizard it still doesn't show a connection or anything. I'm really at a loss and I truly appreciate any help, thank you.

First thing to do is to make sure you have drivers for you LAN card. Go to device manager and see if there are any x's, !'s, or ?'s.

When you say modem, do you mean dial-up modem?

What sort of modem are we talking about here, a dialup modem, a USB broadband modem, or an ADSL router? If you aren't sure just give us the make and model number.

Right click on My Computer / properties and then click on Device Manager. Look for those items that would indicate you are missing drivers for your ethernet card. You will need to use a different computer to go to the manufacturer's website and download the drivers for you LAN card.

    It's a USB device Tim

EDIT - now I'm not too sure about that. The user guide says it has both USB and Ethernet so depends which the OP is using.

What about that Tips and Warnings bit - did you actually see it installing the drivers?

@hippo7 - if this modem is connected by Ethernet rather than by USB, then you will never see a connection for it. The only connection you will see is your LAN card, that's completely normal. Took a while for the penny to drop :-o

Are you saying that under XP's Network Connections you do not have Local Area Connection?

What shows in Device Manager under Network Adapters?

Well, at least that's consistent with what's not showing in Network Connections, but it indicates a significant problem with your latest XP installation. You could go back into Device Manager and scan for hardware changes (icon on right), but it's not likely it will change anything.

I'm off to bed now (UK) and will have to leave this to others I'm afraid.

A further thought ... can you open a command window and type ipconfig /all <Enter> then right click in the window > Select All > Enter. Then open a new post here, right click and Paste.

I don't really have any clue as to why your network and networking components aren't showing, but as the modem is working they are obviously present. This is just a way of gleaning some info about them.

I haven't done this in ages but way way way back on a fussy windows98 or maybe a 95 machine, when it lost the network card completely, I would open the case and move the network card to the next slot to make windows recognize it again. I must have switched the modem and network cards 20 times but it always worked. If you have a slot to move the card to, it could be worth the try.
