    Hi

Does anyone know offhand what I can use to produce a still from some .AVI videos I have?

    Free would be better.

    (Win 7 64bit)

    Greetings, Laura.

I imagine VirtualDub can handle captures, but I've never used it.

I have, however, used ImageGrab with pretty good success.

    Both are free. ;)

Thanks. :) I'll try VirtualDub first and see how it goes.

That works for me. Of course, I couldn't see anywhere that allowed you to take out frames, but it allowed me to export it as an Adobe filmstrip and I can extract it in Photoshop.

I don't have software but I know of a workaround that allows you to take screenshots? In you play your AVI files with media player go into preferences and disable video overlays this will stop you screenshotting a black screen, you can then take shots with the printscreen key but will have to be cut as it takes a screenshot of your whole desktop.

    What I use.

If you use VLC media player there's actually a screenshot function built in,it automatically saves them to file and you have can take screenshots like your using an SLR camera. The default snapshot key is Shift+S,I set the default file location in VLC preferences to my storage drive or they go default into the VLC file on your C: drive. In VLC click tools at the top drop down, preferences, video and the screenshot settings are at the bottom. File location,JPG/PNG ect.:)

BTW the snapshots it takes are of the source resolution,so if the video is only 640X480 resolution that's how big the snapshot will be,even if you've blown it up to full screen.

I know its not what you asked for but now your have options:-D

I downloaded VLC. I like that much better and I don't have to go through the filmstrip in Photoshop. Thanks Rikky.

Brilliant:)Its easy too as you get a big VLC snapshot taken message over the video,so you know for sure before you check the folder whether you got the right snapshot or not.

That's my biggest gripe about the printscreen function,no snapshot message.

Never would have thought about VLC - that's pretty cool! ;)

    Was pretty easy too.:)

I didn't see a confirmation for the printscreen, but that's okay. I had my pictures library open and went in and was able to locate them all no prob.
