My friend Carlos and I were talking about schools which progressed into the computers schools had that were out back in the day. Like the old Apple computers with dos and only a command prompt and this is how the convo when after that...

Him: You know what that's called right?
    Me: Uh.. no?
    Him: it's called "gooey"
Me: gooey? what is a gooey?
Him: a gooey is a Graphical User Interface.
Me: OH! you mean a GUI?
Him: Yea but it's pronounced "gooey"
Me: I've heard it called a GUI but never a "gooey"
Him: In the tech field, they call it "gooey".

So here is my silly question.. Is he right? is it really pronounced as "gooey" and I've been in the dark all this time? or is he full of it? :-D

It is, but it is one acronym I refuse to pronounce that way. I call it the G.U.I.

Why make an abbreviation longer than the 3 fooking letters? :-D

  5. Caliban

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    :highfive :-D

'Bout like saying "Ohm-gah" (OMG) or "Wat-if" (WTF)...

    And the list goes on...

Yeah, like the guys said, he's actually right. But I too, dislike the unnecessary obfuscation of terms by using acronym words, especially when it's only like three letters, anyway.rolleyes
Something like saying "laser" instead of "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation" fair enough - but "Gooey" sounds a bit "tacky", i.m.h.o.;)

Actually, "gooey" is only two syllables, whereas G.U.I. is three, so it is still shorter when speaking. Just not writing. :-D

You are more than welcome to your opinion. :-D I refuse to use the 'gooey' expression. Unless we are talking about a dessert topping.

Exactly! Also for logic's sake I refuse to write shortened versions of already short words - like "xtra" as a shortcut for the word "extra" . . . it's just one more freaking letter, for Pete's sake . . . !!

I don't know, but if Jeopardy accepts it as an answer, I will, even if I won't say it. (Jeopardy does, just so you know.)
