I have windows 7(64bit) and am about to do use SmartDefrag for a Boot Time Defrag........Does anyone know if this is a full defrag? And I have heard that a lot of files can't be moved for optimization because they are always in use...How do I find a way around this.

This is the setting I am about to use....(short hand)

    Defrag PageFile/HibernationFile
    Defrag MFT
    Defrag System Files

I just don't want to hurt my computer by over defragging, or defragging something I shouldn't because of my OS or some other random reason.

Smart defrag have now released a version 2 and its a full program it will defrag all your hard drive. I have been using it for a while now and its the only program i use for defragging my computer.

Puran Defrag will defrag at boot before the OS starts.

Thanks Dark Byte.....Somehow people wanted to tell me about what was good rather than say what it does.....Though I appreciate everyone's input.

I will restate the question that wasn't answered. Does anyone know a way around getting unmovable files to be movable so the defrag can move them around for optimization purposes?

As mentioned by dave.m in post #3, Puran Defrag. Not sure about hiberfil.sys as I don't have one, it won't impact upon normal running anyway. Use the boot time defrag.

Pagedefrag will defrag the hibernation file, registry hives, pagefile and more.

The reason for having a boot time defrag is so that files that are not moveable during the normal operation of windows can be moved before windows is fully loaded.

    to satrow:
Win7 isn't listed on the page you linked to.
Is there a newer version since the poster has Win7 (64 bit)?

Ah, Pagedefrag? Good point, it doesn't work on my W7/64, if you check the Sysinternals/MSFT page, it's the latest version. From their forum.

    Sorry about that.

Sorry about that, one question though, why would you defrag the the MFT and the Hibernation files, even the pagefile? You would barely see an increase in speed if any at all. Unless your computer is been run that hard from the beginning and you routinely install new software while uninstalling others, i dont really see a need for a defrag of those critical files. Like others have said, Smart Defrag v2 is good, but personally i use Auslogics Defrag which has the options to defrag the MFT, do boot time defrags, move system files to the front of the disk for faster access. Try it out, works good for me.
