After much thought and consideration, I have decided that I wanted a pistol. I did a little research, and waited for a sale. I was going to go with a 9mm, since I have that carbine and usually have bullets for it anyway, but they were out of that model so I went with the .40

So here she is, my new Smith & Wesson Sigma .40 handgun! It's my first pistol, and I know it wasn't REALLY expensive.. So be easy on me. LOL :major

Looks a lot like a Glock... Nice gun. My fried has one of the 9mm ones, I just don't care for the lllloooonnnnggg trigger pull it has. How is the trigger on that one?

:guns You got to have at least one handgun. :-D

It is those plastic guns, one or two mags or ammo through one, and they just fall apart. :-D:-D

Of course, if certain people learn not to use them as hammers...

What? And here I was getting ready to send a rather nasty email to Glock about how poor of a hammer their guns make... It is not a hammer? LOL, I like the metal guns and the plastic ones.

    :-D

I am very impatiently waiting for my 9mm barrel to show up. Got the bullets and the magazine, just no barrel yet.

Works well on a head... :-D

The mag base plates 'can' break off... lol but no big deal, even the metal ones break off...

Not if you listen to the 1911 crowd... :-D

LOL... shot Glock comps for a whille, ran into those old 1911 hardliners.... can't debate the knock down power of the 45, and of course the originals from early 1900s had to be tough because you certainly couldn't hit much with them and the best way to disable an enemy was throw it at him... :-D

    3 broken base plates for me in 40+ years .. 2 - 1911 1 factory, 1 after market and 1 glock factory...

Metal bends easily too Fred and causes insertion problems... ;) and of course no one wants insertion problems.. :cool

I like and own plastic guns, and a 1911. I see a place for them both. But on some forums, the 1911 vs Glock rages on and on and on. :-D

I think that's just how it's depicted/shown in that pic -- the clip is not fully inserted.

:-D:-D I used to own a 4006 model S&W .40 cal like that, but in stainless. Good shooting gun. Still wish I had not sold that one. :cry

Very similar to the 1911. OH, and Tuesday marks the 100'th birthday of the 1911 being adopted by the US military. My proverbial hat is off to J. Moses Browning. A man of many inventions.

The mdl 410 has alloy to lessen the weight. Stainless is nice, but I prefer non-reflective surfaces on my guns. LOL

Nothing wrong with stealth mode guns. Now that I think about it, the only color on my guns, except for the old .32 are the wood grips.

I learned something in my CCL class. It really is a good drill to practice if you shoot pistols. Toss a couple of snap caps in your loads. It is amazing how many people, myself included, freeze when the gun does not go bang.

    Thus, this drill.

Excellent drill... Ernie our instructor at the IU shooting range taught us this drill with wheel guns back in the early 70s.
Your shooting partner always loads you gun and you never know whether you are 'squeezinggggggggggg' of a live round or the firing pin is striking an MT. I actually have experienced a cylinder full of MTs. It is by far the best drill I have ever seen to eliminate, or stop flinching.

Way back down in the post Dr M mentioned the 1911 'vs' Glock debate.
I think one should own both a Mod 1911 45 and a Glock of your favorite caliber... I see both filling separate needs.
I have had several 45s SAs and liked them all... lots of penetration and knockdown power. Just not a pleasurable gun to plink hundreds of rounds with you know.
I think it is more the caliber than the gun.
Three officer friends had a shootout on a back road one evening with a crazy and the two initial units onseen, both deputies were losing the gunfight until a CO came along and emptied his Beretta 45 into the car. When the shoot out was over, only 2 of the 30 some 9s of the deputies penetrated the car, and then only thru side windows. The 45 punched holes even thru the door and interior frame.
Now having said that, even the 45 doesn't penetrate high quality body armour, but the caliber still packs a huge punch and put the bad guys in a defensive mode.
My grandson who is assigned to an interstate drug task force was pulling OD security work when 3 purps who were ejected from the establishment came back all armed and to do a drive by... my grand son got into his first shoot out and even with his Glock 40 cal, with the quartering away angle of the car only 1 of his 3 rounds penetrated thru the high side of the car, the back of the seat and into the target.
All 3 OD officers were using 40s and the 3 got out of the parking lot and were finally done in a mile down the street by multiple units.
The mod 1911 is a unique weapon, and I think the best military arm ever, but I qualify that to the improved 1911s. The originals we not extremely accurate even in the best shooters hands. Fairly, the ammo was likely contributory, but still the military and police friends, along with my personal experience with early stock guns left much to be desired, as far as accuracy.
Again, having said that, I've shot built guns and race guns which one can hit a bouncing tin can with all 8 shots.
    OK... :wave

I much prefer the 1911 myself. If I have to shoot them, I definitely want to make sure the single shot to do the job.

Not me. If it comes down to protecting myself I don't care if I have my AK-47, 9mm carbine, or my pistol, you're getting the whole clip. ;)

And today is the 100'th anniversary of the US adopting the 1911 as the official sidearm of the military!

One of the best sigs I have seen in the Glock vs 1911 endless debate are: "Sure, your 9mm might expand, but my .45 will not shrink." and ".45 ACP - It's like a 9mm but for grown-ups."

    I like both. :-D

Easy, so I can shoot 6 more targets. Unlike the 9mm, which wastes several rounds on one target before they realize they're dead.

    My 1911 45 mag holds 8 rounds. :-D

  36. Triaxx2

I had a WWII era gun and mag, where you didn't load it full because of the spring. So you can blast nine schmucks before you have to reload.

(Eight in the mag, one in the pipe, for the non-gun informed.)

So, did you shoot that .50 yet Pax? What do you mean about getting a FFL opens doors for purchasing guns? I thought it just allowed you to ship and receive shipments of gun(s). I just pay a local shop when If I need a gun shipped to me. You still have to pay uncle for any exotic stuff. :-D

  43. Paxton007

    Paxton007 MajorGeek

From what I understand, and I know very little about it right now... You can buy pistols and have them shipped right to your house, instead of to a gun shop and paying to transfer and all that. There's something about an antiquaries list that the ATF lists guns on that you can buy guns from... I don't know. The guy that has the 50 has an FFL, and I know he just picked up some old pistols for about $70 each and made it sound like a deal.

Tim, you can come. But you're in charge of the cake!

  44. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

Interesting Pax, I thought it was only an advantage if you buy a lot of guns. A 'Curios and Relics' license is cheaper and lets you do some of that, not sure on the difference.

  45. Paxton007

    Paxton007 MajorGeek

Curios and Relics. That's it! But he made it sounds like that was part of his FFL. He does have a few guns, close to 40 I think.. Not bad for being under 30 years old.

I think the coolest gun (50 BMG aside) that he has is this Imbel FAL with a DSA Type I receiver. It's a semi-Automatic .308 and just looks mean!

I'll have to talk with him more about the FFL thing, but he said it's like $30 for 3 years, so just to have it, I don't think sounds like a waste of money. I'm sure you know more about it than me, so don't change what you believe because of something I tell ya, LOL.

Our old British army rifle 'when chambered in 7.62',kicks like a mule and hits less in full auto than an AK but still keeps the enemies head down:cool

Fred, the first line in that Wikipedia link about FFL's mentions individuals and / or companies. I know he doesn't have a storefront anywhere, his family owns a business, but it has nothing at all to do with weapons or ammunition.

I know he pays $30 so he's got the collector FFL.
