    Hello Networking People.
I have been referred to this forum page by Kestrel 13.
On Friday my Del Insprion Mini laptop got infected with malware. I have successfully removed the infection using the steps and progs from the Malware Removal forum threads.
I cannot connect to the internet can anyone help me out, please?
If you need to see logs they are in the Malware Removal thread.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best,
    S

What happens if you hard wire to the modem directly?

For that course of action I will need to find/buy a cable! I will look into it.
When I tried to diagnose through windows I got a 'catasropic error' message. Lummy!

Your modem from your ISP has a built in wireless router? Or you have a separate wireless? If you have a separate wireless it has a cable you can use. Usually there is one included in many ISP self-install kits, computer shipping boxes, router packaging, etc. Heck, i have about 10 in my house, come over!

I saw one near the check out at the Dollar General store the other day and one in the drug store near the universal phone charger cord. There are everywhere these days.

Did you install any protection or tools when you completed the malware forum fixes? Someone just had a problem with one of those programs blocking a few days ago. It showed set correctly but internet didn't work until uninstalling it and reinstalling it fixed the problem. Worth checking as well.

like TimW and handygal have suggested try connecting via the ethernet cable, try also to factory reset your router, and also uninstall any AV software for the time being, once you have Internet access re-install the AV and see how things go.

Thanks. I will give that a go and let you know. I'll carry out the closing steps of the RunMeReadMe (uninstalling all the cleaning progs) first though as handygal suggests.
    Will get back to you.

Do you mean the router or the modem in the laptop?
I've not tried resetting the router but it is supplying wireless perfectly for all the other devices in the house - so it is working.
We have a NETGEAR DG834 ADSL Firewall Router Router - 4-port switch.
Is there anything I can run on my laptop to see what is happening with the wireless modem? If you set up the Dell LAN wireless function it says that the net is connected, but the pages won't load. I can't seem to find the windows version. Internet options is blank.
    Thanks in advance.

Now that you have connected to the modem, do an IP config:

    Start / run / cmd

    In the Command window, type:
    IPCONFIG /all

    Post the results.

Another trouble shooting option - Boot into Safe Mode with Networking. Any change?

Possible problem also is having 2 software applications running the wireless connection. If you use the Dell application to manage the connection, stop the WZC (XP & Vista) or the WLAN AutoConfig (Win7) service - How to

If you want to use the Windows app, stop the Dell service (not sure of the name of this service) or uninstall the application.

Also, possibly need to reset the TCP/IP stack - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

I ran the IP config, but got nothing but my name appearing. I guess that this means that the modem has not connected or registered. At the moment I think that the Del Lan wireless function is operating the wireless. Normally Windows does the job, but it is strangely absent at the moment.
I'll run the other checks and let you know.
    Thanks.
