Nothing wrong with iain.t's suggestions, I've used them both but I'm currently using Puran and I'm happy with it.

So what's wrong with the FREE one that came with the OS?

It's written by MS, and what could be more compatible with your OS than that?

Oh yes, I've tried some of the After Market Defrag programs.

But why add more junk to your C: drive if you don't have to?

I tried the "Defraggler" and it rendered my HD unbootable.
Then I tried Auslogic's Defrag and it left my HD so messed up that I had to do a Ghost Restore to put it right again. It had data scattered from one end of the HD to the other.

So for myself and my hundreds of customers, I (we) all just use the built-in defrag program that comes with every Microsoft OS, as far back as I can remember.

The most perfect Defrag I can get for my own XP PC, is a Ghost backup of C: and then a Ghost Restore of C:. That re-writes every file in perfect order with NO spaces and NO fragmented files.

I find it extremely AMAZING that Defraggler and Auslogic's defrag tools rendered your hard drive unbootable.

And while you are certainly entitled to your opinion, this post is more of a fanboy of MS post than anything else.

    JMHO.

I have always found the Windows defragger to be "brain-dead".
I use UltimateDefrag Free Edition on my XP machines.

Visit MG's Drive Utilities at http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads8.html for a list of Defraggers, and other Utilities.

I use Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.1.10.165 ( http://www.majorgeeks.com/Auslogics_Disk_Defrag_d5266.html ) regularly, at least weekly, for years and have had no problems with it. It has been downloaded 245445 times from MG alone, with a rating of 4.54/5 (442 votes), from MG members.

I have used it on XP, Vista and Windows 7 with no problems.

Just curious, on Windows 7, are you needing to defrag that much? It automatically defrags every Wednesday by default. Just curious.

I would recommend you the smart defrag. Its got the Cnet's editors choice award. I used auslogics defrag as well but I picked the smart defrag because I think it uses less computer resources thats why it works faster. But both of them are great applications and they are much better than the standart windows defrager.

I guess it's just a habit of mine dating back many years, and different MS OS's, back to W98 at least.

I've never seen W7 automatically defrag on Wednesdays. I've never read, or heard, of this happening. I'd be interested in any info/links you can provide about this.

My son's Win 7 computer was set by default to defrag on Wednesday in Task Scheduler.

Defrag programs are and have always been a fiercely debated and discussed topic.... I'm personally using the paid version of DiskTrix UltimateDefrag, and I really like it. It's got so many ways to set it up and run it, that I haven't figured it all out yet. I usually just manually launch it once every 10-14 days or so. I have also used the following the free defraggers, and give each one 4.5 or 5 stars:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Auslogics_Disk_Defrag_d5266.html
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Glarysoft_Disk_SpeedUp_d6526.html

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/O&O_Defrag_Free_Edition_d4545.html
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Puran_Defrag_Free_Edition_d6360.html
There's also a free version of DiskTrix Ultimate Defrag, I thought it was available here at MajorGeeks but I couldn't seem to locate it (it's available here at the DiskTrix web site).

I hope this helps and doesn't add to your confusion.... I also had a thread or two here at MajorGeeks about this same topic but (again) I could seem to find 'em, but I also didn't spend more than 20 seconds looking.... :-o

I personally don't put any weight in the Cnet Editor's Choice "awards". They have given these "awards" to some incredibly lousy terrible programs, including some that were borderline malware and others that simply didn't work at all....

The built-in Windows defraggers have never been all that great at doing a deep defrag. Yes, they work, but if the user is anything like me and is consistently installing, uninstalling programs, moving data between drives, deleting this, adding that, then a drive can get fragmented fairly quickly, and without a good defragger, the situation never really gets better, just slowly worse. I have personally disabled the built-in Win7 defragger, and I manually run DiskTrix UltimateDefrag (the paid version) every 10-14 days....

AFAIK Defraggler, Auslogics etc i.e. the freeware utilities don't defrag system files (the last time I checked, I don't think it has changed in the last few months) so they're not much of an 'upgrade' over the native defrag utility.

Only the commercial auto defrag (i.e. set & forget types) that can defrag all files including system files, consolidate free space efficiently, work with Win7/vista's shadow copy service etc are an improvement over the native utility. And these are not free BTW.

Umm, I'd advise you to check a little further; Puran, linked to in my earlier post:
Some of the other freeware defraggers offer a similar range of features, too.

    Thanks tgell.

I always turn my computer OFF after each session. Too many years in the tropics of OZ with cyclone season, storms, etc., to risk danger to my PC/laptop. So my laptop is extremely rarely ON at the default timing, even though I could alter it.

I also like to manually run a defrag on its own, as the Irish say, to be sure to be sure. :-D

From motc7's #14 post, it is not required to leave your machine on. If you do not get to defrag it at the scheduled time, it will start a defrag at the next boot.

Personally I wouldn't call a Cnet editors recommended app a good one! but that said also deframentation is a very spurious area, in that how do you know a defrag app has actually worked? in the main they are just blocks of colours on a screen and the measure of a defrag app is if when you run it, it says you have 0% fragmentation, is that a real measure of performance?

Is that a measure, I dunno, for me it is not a rule of thumb as is you actually measuring the speed of a PC after a defrag run, the perception is that is makes a PC run vastly quicker, I don't in the main think it does, it may help but its not a cure all, in the same vain as registry cleaners.

I agree that the Windows default defragger in the likes of Win Vista and 7 are good and all that is in the main needed as NTFS handles itself very well, unless you are installing/uninstalling vast amounts of apps daily.

I personally use O&O defrag pro, but its due to moving huge amounts of data around on various extra drives, its disabled for my C: drive that has Windows on it, as its not really needed, but I have it on auto defrag when needed for the 3TB of HD space on 2 other HDDs.

If I was to suggest a free defrag app then Puran is a good one to run, O&O also have a free version HERE

Thanks tgell. I did read motc7's post, but as I said I prefer to run Defrag on its own, at the conclusion of my Net session. I don't want it running at startup. Just a prejudice of mine. :-D
