HP Pavilion Laptop monitor wires broken

OK... a laptop my wife used to use for her games was knocked off by hospital personnel while our daughter was asleep in her hospital room recently. Of course they all denied it. :cry

It is an HP Pavilion and if you are sitting at the laptop, the tiny black and white wires running up and behind the screen on the right side were severed.

My eyes are still good at distance, but even with my magnifiers on it appears these are tiny ribbons encased in a tiny plastic sleeve/tube, rather than wires?

There are other parts physically broken, but I have plugged in an external monitor and the unit works fine.

    Can "I" fix this????? :confused

so the monitor does or doesn't work at all?

I'm assuming the laptop monitor still works, but it 'might not' as from all appearances the computer was knocked off a hospital bedside tray and hit the floor on the left back bottom corner. This broke the monitor free from the bottom portion of the computer and severaed the white and black wire. The wiring 'harness??) on the left side appears intact.

I do know that I can externally plug my samsung flat screen monitor into the puter and it works.

Being a novice here, I thought the black and white wires were just that... two simple little wires and I could just reconnect them in some manner, possibly a drop of silver solder or something and then we could still use the laptop.

If I can't then cut the other wires and use the puter as a desktop cpu with another monitor.

    Hi,
Depends on the extent of the damage!!! the cables are relatively easy to replace, also is the screen and screen bezel, if you could upload a picture of the damage we will be able to give you a better assessment, or a better detailed description of the actual damage and how it affects the use of the laptop. Also can you give me the exact model of the HP Pavilion you have as this will help in finding the service manual for your machine.

I'll try and find our camera...

    HP Presario dv8000

FYI... I have the bezel off the screen and both are intact. Both hinges, being cast aluminum broke off cleanly and did not damage the base part of the machine or the monitor. The case has some physical damage, but when I plugged a monitor in the machine worked fine so I can only assume there is no major damage to HD, MB or any of the other electronics. The keyboard works also and so does audio.

The troublesome damage is the two broken wires, which shut down the monitor, and unless upon reconnecting I find it has destroyed the monitor then I will rig this thing up and continue to use it. I'm not even going to purchase a new case, I have already figured how to rig this up with monitor open in a rigid position. Then, my wife (who has MS and spends most of her time in bed) will use it like an 'on her lap desktop'. She likes this laptop because we purchased it especially for her as it was a 'gaming machine' with LARGE monitor and she can see it well.

So, can I strip the tiny plastic tube from the center wire/ribbon and use tiny jumpers to see if the monitor works?

    Hello,
For your reference, here is the service manual for the DV8000.

Thank you much... I'm reviewing the manual.. so now I'm really confused as these two wires appear to be little more than an antenna?

Shine a flashlight onto the laptop screen and see if anything is being displayed. The backlight may have broken.

OK... I shined a flashlight, and my work table light on the face of the screen, but I see nothing...

I have an external flat panel monitor hooked up and the computer is working fine...

    Hi,
If you are not seeing anything whilst shining the torch on the screen then it is not just a backlight issue, it could be your screen is caput, does it look like there is any damage cracks or bleeds, if not then take it that the screen is still good, it could be the inverter board a replacement can be found here..

these are also very simple to replace. Also there is the possibility that the lcd cable is broken these are harder to detect as they are housed in tape, you can get one from here..

or of the US site if your from that side of the pond ;).

    Arizona USA here..

There is no apparent physical damage to the screen, nor the two boards, connection points of the wiring harness connecting to the base of the puter.

I am planning to run the system diagnostics to see if it will tell me anything about the monitor... I think I can do this while I have my samsung monitor plugged into the external port??

    Hi,
I am not sure if the diagnostics will give you a heads up on the laptops monitor if you have an external plugged in, I would of thought that it would of just gave one for the one that is in use?? though I am no expert in this maybe someone else will jump in and advise!!.
Though the inverter board may not look damaged it could still be due to the "drop shock", I think you can test this using an electricians multimeter tool, to see if there is power going through it.
