High Speed Packages

My highspeed cable internet package advertises download speeds of up to 14Mbps. Speed tests show that my computer is maxing this out.

If I cut costs ($10) and downgrade my highspeed package that advertises download speeds of up to 7Mbps, would I see that much of a difference compared to what my current package allows?

My habits... I surf a lot and e-mail. I don't download music files, but I watch the odd YouTube video or videos sent by friends through forwarded e-mails. The odd windows or program update.

    Thanks.
    :)

If going for the package of ($10 less) 7 Mbps it will turn up that indeed your download speed would go down.

Since IP's have introduced limits (caps) on downloads and uploads, I'd be more inclined to know if my provider gives me enough to do all I want within that limit (cap). My cap limit is 60 GB monthly and have plenty to play around in. The limit includes downloads and uploads. Any over 60 GB and I'd have to pay extra. My ISP provides gives daily, monthly stats as to what I consume in MB/GB and can access them at any time. You should get that information from your provider.

Prior to changing go over each offer and their limits (caps) decision. Also check if your ISP lowers the limit (cap) when lowering to the 7 Mbps. I think they would. Then decide.

Here I've got a pic of what my IP provides. As you can see there is a cap on all packages and the caps are quite lower in the first 2 packages on the page.

Ask your IP how much you use on a monthly basis and you take it from there.

    Good luck Oooops

If the bandwidth limit that some ISPs impose, as oma mentioned, is not an issue, then I'd say make the change and save the money. You won't notice any hindrance for your internet usage habits. I recently upgraded my DSL from 1.5Mbps to 3Mbps and even that change is not very noticeable for web browsing and email. And, yes, I also watch some video content from youtube or other sites. The most noticeable difference is in downloading large files and that, alone, would not have justified the upgrade for me since downloading very large files is a relatively infrequent event and waiting some time for a download to complete is not an issue; I can be doing other things while a download is in process. The main reason I made the change in my DSL service is simply that they came up with a better package, one that included unlimited long distance phone calls.

Oh, I should mentioned, my ISP imposes no bandwidth limit.

The cap is 60 GB with regular highspeed @ 14Mbps downloads.
The cap is 30 GB with lite highspeed @ 7 Mbps downloads.

Wow, my ISP says I haven't gone over 11 GB per month according to their records for the past 3 months.

So I guess my only worry is lack of speed, lol.

Apparently for the light package, they'll charge me $2 per month for their security services whether I use it or not. I don't get charged for it on my standard package. I'll only be saving $8 per month if I drop my package down... maybe I'll just stick with what I've got for a measly few extra dollars, lol. Oy.

I'll cut corners some place else, lol.

Wow, I wouldn't be able to survive on 60 GB per month. :)

Most of this is netflix and the occasional game download.

If you were to take the lite highspeed the difference in download speed might not be very noticeable.

Quite some time ago I downgraded after an ISP price increase and noticed the difference in speed somewhat. The upload speed was also lowered by half. Since I hardly upload I didn't care about that.

At least now you know where you stand at with your ISP. Having some elbow room in downloading and uploading is positive by not having to worry about exceeding your cap. :)

OMG, lol... I'm missing out on something with my measly 11 GB, eh?! lol

    Thank you to everyone!
