Random Shutdown when playing WoW or L4D2

This problem just started recently. I would play WoW or L4D2 and for some reason or the other my PC would just shut down. I upgraded my graphic card drivers and scanned my PC for any viruses and everything seems fine. It would just randomly shutdown. No blue screen of death or error. I checked my event log and it said Event 41 Kernel Power. Is there anyway to stop this?

 

There might be, but it would really help to know more about your set-up first. What OS are you in, and what graphics card are you using? Does it happen every single time? Is it only these two games? What else, if anything, does the event log say?

 

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and my graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce GTX 260. It'll happen just randomly, not all the time. And all the event log says is

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

 

Details on the PSU please?

 

Are you monitoring your temperatures? I have a 260 too, and it gets disturbingly hot at times... you can keep an eye on the temps with HWMonitor and see if something goes really hot jut before or after shutdown.

 

Sorry. How do I check that?

 

There should be a sticker on the side of the PSU giving the details of the voltages, etc. That's what I'd like to check. You'll need to open the side of the PC to do that.

 

OK. I found the sticker. Now what did you want to know? The AC Input, DC Output?

 

Post everything you found... we can pick out the important parts.

 

I too have that same kind of problem .... Using windows 7 & video card is nvidia 6150LE .... same event log as your are .. here take a look at this.

BTW, I cleaned out the inside of my system. Apparently, the fan of my video card was caked with dust. Maybe that'll help as well?

My system only seems to shut down when I play World of Warcraft or L4D2. I'll be playing WoW for like 15 minutes and it'll shut down. So I'm not sure if it's the PC temperature.

 

It might fix it, if the problem was overheating

The PSU stats look ok, do you recall who the manufacturer was?

How long can you play for now?

 

Did you ever get a chance to monitor those video card temperatures...?

Yeah, over-heating video cards can led to exactly the behavior you've seen. Hopefully that was it.
