This started with a message "Firefox could not install this item because of a failure in Chrome Registration" so I started a Google search for a solution and found one straight away - right click on Firefox icon and 'run as administrator'. Lots of folk saying, 'thanks, worked like a dream'. Unfortunately not for me.

I uninstalled, emptied the recycle bin and made sure no instances of Mozilla were in my file (as far as I could see) and reinstalled but the problem persists. I even tried to start FF in safe mode but my computer just shut down.

Any ideas? I'm in Vista (unfortunately)

    thanks

edit: I no longer get the chrome registration error just a Mozilla crash reporter

Well, in my case started with the same thing, I scanned with my aplicattions (viruses, malware, etc) and now still does not load, but at least give some popup asking with what program I want to open it, so I click firefox and after clicking home it loads "perfectly". I have another problems with other programs/applications that does not load as a result of some broken links "virus" that I had been not able to fix, so my next step, backing up and fresh install. So, if you tryed some of this, and if your SO has been long time, start thinking in a fresh install.

Disable all your addons except for noscript then close your browser. Does the error popup? If not, one of your addons is causing the problem. You can enable two addons, close the browser and then reopen. If no error, those addons are okay; if an error, one of those addons is the problem.

It will be a long drawn out process but eventually, you will discover the offending addon or addons and remove them. You should see no more error messages.

    I don't know how to disable add-ons :(

Doesn't firefox have to be open to do that <clueless>

    After installation, try:

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing%20profiles

And try using a different profile.

soddin' Vista, those recognisable files aren't listed as such in Vista but I seem to have 2 Mozilla files now one called Mozilla(53) and the other Mozilla(205) in one I found in Mozilla\profiles a file called 2vqx7zob.default in that two more files 'bookmarkbackups' and 'minidumps' plus a load of other stuff. In the other file 8njy0pyp.default, in that minidumps file and compreg.data and xpti.dat

This is the first time that two Mozilla files have appeared :confused

This morning I tried to load Firefox in safe mode and it just made my laptop crash! (that's twice now)

Hello Parmesan. :) What happened when you ran the instructions by theefool.

So Fx is not installed, right? Not to sure if the profile will list but worth a shot.
    Vista right..
Click Start, in the search box copy and paste %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
    Open the.default folder.
Open the bookmarksbackup folder. On the latest back up, (date) right click copy and paste to desktop as a .JSON file, called Bookmarks.
Now that the Bookmarks are saved, run the search for %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles again and delete all profile folders listed.

If the above won't list get to your .default folder you mentioned and back up then delete the folder and all related to Fx.

Try installing FX again and let us know how it goes.

    Cheers..:)

Yeah, forgot about the remnants of an uninstall of firefox still being on the computer. Hence why I was thinking about a new profile.

Okay. I started in Safe Mode and deleted all found Mozilla related files then reinstalled it.

I am still getting an error report.

There is nothing in the bookmarkbackup file :cry

By the way, I tried creating a new profile, don't know if I did it right because it didn't do much, just asks for a profile name, finish, then start FF which I did and got the error message again

Ok I'm now on a Mac so no navigation- just Google for me. Any thing in the path below.
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions
    If yes, delete all.
Did you delete all instances of Fx you found earlier? Why are you trying this in Safe mode?
    Cheers..

I uninstalled Firefox and emptied the waste basket as well
    Restarted the laptop
Downloaded Firefox 4 in English (British)
Launced FF and I got the plain page, typed google in the address line and got the crash error message.
I looked in the file Mozilla there is an extensions file with nothing in it
There is a Firefox file with 2 folders viz Crash Reports and Profiles and a file on its own called profiles with an icon like a cog and a piece of paper behind it.

That's it. Can't imagine what the problem is! :confused

The same chrome related?!! If not please mention the exact error message.
Got to go now, getting a bit late here. Please try this as well.
    http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html
Navigate to FF and uninstall. If the app asks to reboot don't, till you clear out the registry.
Please only select the high lighted entries. Continue and finish the clean up.
Again check manually for folders as mentioned earlier. Delete if found. Reboot, install and give it a go.
    Cheers..

What if you were to install into a different location? Instead of program files, lets try c:\firefox.

And if that doesn't work, try a different user account.

It won't allow me to change the location :confused

Don't know what you mean by a different user account :clueless:
