Hi !! First of all ;I'm a great big big fan of Major Geeks. I have been straitened out by some of the coolest and smartest people on this forum. I thought I knew it all ; wrong:-D. You will get bored before you read all this post, but you might learn some thing also. I was cleaning out my pass words on firefox. I clicked the wrong thing and lost all my pass words, sXXX. I can't remember all my pass words; what to do. Ok; no big deal, I'll use Macrium Reflect and restore my PC back like it was. Opps; been lazy, last restore 3-25- 2011. I have made a lot of changes sense then. I've been bragging on Major Geeks that I can be back up where I was in a hour or less. Well it's been two hours and I'm still trying to get back where I was; almost there. Thank God for Macrium Reflect I'm almost there. How in the hell do old people maintain a computer. I'm 73 and self taught, but boy does it get to be a real pain in the rear to keep this PC running. I'm on my third glass of Canadian Hunter ( Whiskey) and just about back to where I was before I clicked the wrong thing. I wish I had the knowledge of some of our older members on this forum. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck, but I'm not even close to our experts on this forum. You can give me all the static you want to, but I just learned some things while I went through all this restore process. Registry cleaners and Registry defrag do make a big difference. I wish I had went slower and taken some screen shots while doing this restore. To late now. You will probably say "Jack , you would have been better off with out the Canadian Hunter" and your probably right, but that's another story. Damn neuropathy:-D You may want to move this thread to jokes section, but it's a true story and I'm standing by it. I'll be back where I was before I clicked the wrong thing in another 30 minutes. This is a true story my friends. Back up your OS and keep it current :-D
Major Geeks needs a clown and I'm eligible to fill that position , but this is a true story my friends!! I'm not posting to up my posts. Maybe this has no place here on Major Geeks, but this is what happened to this old man and I'm standing by my story. Back up you OS; damn it, and keep it current.
    Oneeyejack!! Good night my friends!!

Hi!! OK I'm back where I was. Every thing is cool!! I racking my pea brain, trying to think of a easier way to restore deleted passwords in firefox. I can mount a image in Windows Explorer with Macrium Reflect by clicking on the back up image and assigning it a drive letter; but where would I look for passwords. If I new where firefox stored them, maybe I could use copy and paste them back????? Anyone know?? Thanks !!:confused

Hi Tim. Thanks for your reply. I know about that feature. My problem was while I had that feature open. I was trying to use the feature and I clicked the remove all instead show all and I lost all of them. The only way I knew to get them back was to restore my OS with Macrium. Is there another easier way??
Thanks for your reply. That link will help our members
PS Sorry my thread wasn't clearer.:confused

Hi!! Tim. Now that might work next time I pull some thing stupid. I hope I never do that again, but knowing this makes me feel better. I sure would like to know where firefox stores passwords though. If I knew that I could mount a image in Windows Explorer and copy and paste them.

What OS are ye using? xp, vista, 7?

    If 7, it should be:

    c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\mozilla\firefox\profiles

username of course is your user account name.

You can always reset passwords by using the normal procedure found on websites for resetting a forgotten password. I know that's a nuisance but you may not have any other choice.

I, too, save passwords in Firefox but I also keep them elsewhere. Saving them in Firefox is just done for the convenience it provides for quick signing in.

In the future, perhaps keeping the passwords in a separate file would be best. You might keep the file on a flash drive. A spreadsheet file works well for this, in my opinion. For sensitive passwords such banking, keeping them completely off computer media may be the most secure way.

If you keep them in a folder on the computer or on a flash drive, encrypt it. ;)

Hi Thanks. I'll have to Google encrypted folder. You guys are a little over my head, but I'm learning. I do now have them in a folder and I can always restore my OS with Macrium. Having them in a folder will help if I get stupid again and delete them:-D
    Thanks!!

Also, btw, I now use last pass for keeping my passwords:

    http://lastpass.com/

It is free, though, they do have a pay for version, that I'm thinking about using.

I had to modify the install.rdf file to get it to work on my version of firefox that is running the nightlies.

Hi!! Now I have to learn how to encrypte them. Always learning some thing new;);) Thanks guys!!
PS I'm getting plenty of good suggestions. I will look into all of them. This is all new stuff to me. I do now have them in a folder, and that's a good thing.

Here's a dumb question. If I mount a image of my OS in Windows Explorer. then copy and paste these two files( key3db and signons sqlite) in firefox;would this restore my passwords if I deleted them by accident ?? Am I getting to far out??

Not sure, but, it would be worth a try. I know the program I posted would use those two files to get the passwords for you.

Hi friend!! I'm not sure I have explained every thing very well. I do have my passwords back after restoring my OS, and I now have them in a folder. Not ready to try all that again:-D:-D to see if it would work. I was kind a thinking out load.
    Thanks for your reply friend!!
PS I just counted all my passwords. I have 24 saved. That's ridiculous. Is the whole world paranoid?? Every site you join, makes you have a password. I'm to damn old to remember them all.

Note to self - run Macrium BEFORE investigating potential actions or clean ups and make sure there is a nice current image. I'm sorry, there was a little LOL at your original post but only because you were mostly restored and i think the Canadian was doing some of the talking.

Ohhh, we have all been there, one little click and then hours to fix it again. Some great info here, I'm going to make a copy of my password file right now.

Hence, why I like lastpass, it will create a password for you, save it, then use it next time you are using that site. The pay for version, will also (I believe) create passwords and save them for other applications. Also, if you are on another computer those passwords would transfer over to them, and on phones to.

Hi!! Yes old Canadian was talking a little last night. I have drugs for the neuropathy, but I prefer the Whiskey. I hate drugs. Don't want to get hooked. I know I can handle old Canadian Hunter. He's been a good friend for a long time. Over did him a little last night:-D:-D
    Thanks for your reply handygal!

Hi FYI. I had about 15 restore points. I usually try to use that method and restore to an earlier time. I tried the most recent 3; none of them would work. So much for restore points. I don't have a clue why they wouldn't work. Oh well that's computers. If my PC ever acted the same way every time, I would think there was some thing wrong with it:-D

Hi !! A little off topic. You know how I am. I have been trying to get a response from members here. Several forums love this software and rave about it, but Major Geeks hasn't responded to any of my posts about this software. These files were mentioned on this thread as being associated with passwords(hey3db and signons sqlite). I used this program to easily find them. It's called Search EveryThing and can be found here
I love this program. Give it a try.
