    Hey Friends,

I'm running XP. I usually back up my important data on to dvds using Ashampoo Burning Studio 10. Backing up data can be very monotonous. For example, I back up my psx-psp games. The thing that takes up a lot of time for me is figuring out the size of folders to fit onto one dvd which is usually 4.36 to 4.37 GB. Is there a program out there that can automatically size folders to fit onto one or multiple dvds? The way I usually cram a dvd is to hover the mouse over the folder and cut and paste. There has to be a better more efficient way.

I'm not sure I understand your backup strategy. You only need to back up your data, so why are you backing up your programs also?

I tried Burn to the Brim - free open source, never got the hang it, then I found SizeMe from http://lars.werner.no/?page_id=2
Set the disk size you want to use when you run the first time.
Then just right click a folder and select SizeMe, then you can drag the list straight into Nero, or whatever and burn the right amout.

    Hi abekl

I'm trying to find a program that will sort all files and folders to fit a 4.37 GB DVD. I have a lot of individual files and folders that I try to fit on a DVD. Instead of hovering over the file/folder for the size and then sorting them individually I want automate the process. So when I burn to DVD it will be easy to burn without figuring out the size. Know what I mean?

    Hi

Not come across one app that will do what you want and I do look at backup apps alot, the issue is that many of the apps will not know individual file sizes and collectively sort them as to their ability to copy to one DVD, the majority of backup apps will just span the backup over multiple disks.

    Hey foogoo,

This program seems to be what I'm looking for. It looks a bit difficult to figure out. But thank you very much. Do you have anymore suggestions on software tools to use? Please let me know.

    Hi DavidGP

What do you think of this program that was recommended?

    SizeMe from http://lars.werner.no/?page_id=2

I find it intimidating to use.

    Hi stopads

Interesting question and cheers I now have to download and try that app out ;) but well its interesting and will size the data for backup to a size of disk, but I dont think ist discriminates the actual file, just will size a disk correctly, so some data will or could be on one backup DVD and some on another,

I think from just trying the app out is that you set the Swithc Mode to By Size Flat Level and then the Actions Preset to the disk that you are using and DVDs are DVD5 or DVD9 depending on size of space, yours are likely DVD5s as they are 4.7GB disks.

All you then do is scan a specific location and that then gets added to the app and I just did My Documents below as a test, but you could do the whole of a specific folder as in the C: drive or a games folder although I think this app is more worthwhile for actual files over installs of games for instance as I dont think it will restore a game install accurately.

This is why I tend to use external or internal HDDs for backups and generally use imaging apps for this as you can query the data from many imaging apps and copy and paste specific files from the backup images if you wish.

Here I made a quick tutorial, hope it helps. This is SizeMe running with defaults - the only thing I change is disk sizes - I don't change the 'By Size (flat level) or anything. I want to keep the folders as they are.

    Thanks.
In the video I say to resize the disk smaller, I forgot in the latest version there is an option to 'filll disks to 97%'.
I've used this program for a while & if you find this program useful the author takes donations.

    Thanks fooggo!
That was a GREAT video tutorial! I use Ashampoo also! I hope you don't mind but I linked your tutorial to a few sites and shared with some of my friends. :)
