I have 6 spaces for my memory , the 2 centre ones were used would it make any difference (memory sticks are the same), also can I use any sat sockets on my motherboard for my dvd drive :confused

What motherboard do you have and do you mean SATA sockets? You cn get a SATA CD/DVD drive but you cant plug a standard ATA drive into a SATA socket.

No my motherboard has 6 SAT sockets on and the DVD is SAT but hard drive on first SAT I have to use the 4 th socket because graphics card is the way and do not want to take it out

OK, I have been wrong many times before but I have neer heard of SAT connections. I suspect that they are SATA but they hav been abbreviated on the labels. Do they look like the ones below?

It would be a big help if you could tell us the make and model of your motherboard so that I can understand the boards specifiation and provide a more accurate answer.

It doesn't really matter which SATA port you use - that's the nice thing about SATA. Just use one of the same colored ports as your hard drive uses.

As abekl says it doesnt matter what sockets your devices are plugged into. The order may matter though, as your BIOS may specify the order of SATA the chanels that it attempts to boot from. So put your Boot HD in the lowest number socket, then any secondary HDs then CD/DVD devices in the highest.

Your memory will matter which sockets you plug it into. in section 1-4-1 of the user manual (found here) it states the sockets that you should use depending on the number of memory modules you have. Your system supports dual and tri channel memory configs which means that if you plug it into the correct slots you will double or trebble your memory bandwith which will increase your system performance.

You MB will auto detect what config to run dependent on what sockets you have them plugged into.

Hope this helps? Please get back if you have any further questions.

Most SATA optical drives require that SATA ports are in IDE mode. Most motherboards allow the last 2 SATA ports (highest number SATA ports) to be set into IDE mode independently of the other channels. Therefore you should plug your optical drives into the highest numbered ports available.

This I did not know! Thanks for the info.

According to your Motherboard Manual you actually have 10 SATA sockets labelled 0-9 (See page 7 of the manual to locate them.

According to page 56 of the manual ports 6-9 opperate IDE mode as default.

Your motherboard has the capability to have memory configured in three ways:

    1. One stick of DDR3 memory (RAM). This must be in the blue slot closest to the processor or the blue slot in the middle. (DDR3_1 or DDR3_3).

    2. Up to 3 pairs of RAM sticks. These must be matched in capacity and speed, and it is recommended that they are matched in make/model and age. It is OK to have different sizes/makes/models/ages in the pairs as long as each stick matches the other stick in the pair.

    3. Up to 2 triplets of RAM sticks. These must be matched in capacity and speed, and it is recommended that they are matched in make/model and age. It is OK to have different sizes/makes/models/ages in the triplets as long as each stick matches the other two in the triplet.

The best scenario is #3 as it allows for your RAM to be run in triple channel. At the moment your RAM is run in dual channel (from what you have described). Dual channel means that the data on the RAM is spread over 2 sticks at once, speeding up access time. A very basic comparison is a library. This library has lots of shelves, each of which only one librarian can get to at any one time as they are very narrow. You go into a library and ask for a series of large, heavy books. Single channel RAM is where one librarian goes and retrieves the books, one at a time. Dual channel RAM is where the books are stored on different shelves, allowing two librarians to retrieve one book each trip they make, meaning that you get the series twice as fast. Triple channel RAM is where you have three shelves, and three librarians.

This is a very basic comparison and you will not see a threefold speed increase from your computer by doing this. However you should see a small speed increase.

From what I have read in your motherboard manual the change between single, dual and triple channel should be detected and made automatically. Just plug the sticks in and go!

The triple channel RAM should be tripled via slot colour.

I htought I had answered your memory qyuestion??;)

Collinsl has elabourated though in his previous post. You need to read your manual under the section Installing Memory to get the slot numbers that you need to plug it in. If you plug it into the worng ones then your system would not auto detect dual/tripple channel configuration
