    Hi All,

I'm sure this problem has already come up before, apologies if I missed the thread. My problem is my computer, which is a HP, runs on Vista won't start up. I can enter my log-in ok, but the screen looks like it's loading, but then goes to a dark screen and all I can see is the cursor and nothing else.

It seems to start okay in safe mode, but I am unable to access the internet and I'm unaware what to do next to fix the problem.

    Can anyone help please?

    Thanks in advance

The first thing always when a new problem appears is to try System Restore to a date preceeding the problem. You will need to do this in Safe Mode. Let us know.

    Hi

What is the model HP you have and the Service Pack to Vista?

When the PC boots to this black screen can you hot CTRL-ALT-DEL and bring up task manager then click File > New Task Run and then type explorer and hit enter, do you get your desktop back?

    If so follow the below

Basically I'm looking for a specific start-up, that's known to cause this.

Thank you very much for your speedy response Earthling. I'm not at home now, but will try this as soon as I get in.

Thanks DavidGP for your quick reply. I'm not at home at the moment, but will check what HP model I have. Not sure what a 'Service Pack' is though.

I have tried alt, ctrl and delete, but screen stays the same. Haven't tried doing it in safe mode though.

    Hi

A Service Pack is a major update to Windows, Vista has 2, in SP1 and SP2, to find out what one, right click Computer and choose Properties.

Ok that's good to know in Normal mode that Task Manager doesn't show, try the info on your start-ups and Ccleaner in Safe Mode, and attach the start-up list as mentioned.

As a quick test while you are in Safe Mode, click Start and type msconfig into the Start Search box then hit enter, then open up the Start-up tab and disable everything, then reboot into normal mode, and see if anything has changed.

    Hi DavidGP,

Apologies for delay. My computer is an HP G7000 and I have Service Pack 2.

I tried system restore, but nothing happened.

I typed msconfig and disabled all then rebooted into normal mode, but wouldn't go to my log-in, just got a black screen with 6 or 7 little green lines scrolling left to right microsoft logo. I turned off machine and started again. I was asked if I wanted to do a system restore and I said yes. System rebooted and I got as far as my log-in then I got stuck on the same black screen. I then tried CTRL-ALT-DEL and task manager did come up that time. I tried clicking on File-New Task Run and typed Explorer, desktop came up, but then froze.

Unfortunately I don't seem to have CCleaner loaded. I wasn't aware of that program before now :(

Sorry about this but ran out of time to edit my post...

to take a screen shot and save it for uploading to your next post follow these simple instructions....

    1. open ccleaner by double clicking.

    2. go to Tools > Startup.

    3. Hit the Prt Sc SysRq button on your keyboard.

4.open MS Paint and hit the Paste tab

    5. hit the save tab and name the file of your choice(i named mine ccl1..etc)

then follow the instructions in the link i provided before.

    Hi iain.t,

Thank you very much for the link, but I'm not sure what to do as I am unable to get on-line on my computer to download CCleaner. I think this is something I should've had on my computer before the problems started. Is there an F key I can press to get into safe mode?

    Hi,
To get into safemode ... on reboot continuosly press F8 .... this will give you the options of safemode you need to be in "safemode with networking" as this will allow you to use the internet to download the neccessary files. If you can not use safemode with networking you can download and save the ccleaner and any other files/programs that you will need ont a cd disc or usb flash drive then upload onto the machine that you are having issues with, all of which can be done in safemode.

    Hi,

I've now got CCleaner on my computer, thanks for that. Although I seemed to have trouble with the print screen, I managed to do a Save to Text File and have attached it.

    I hope this helps

    Cheers

    Greetings, elbaroni.

I'll just throw a quickie in here: since you've got CCleaner loaded, may as well let it do its thing. Run both the Files and Registry cleaners (make sure you save a registry backup when prompted).

This may or may not help with your issues, but it certainly won't hurt to do some background cleanup.

I'll let the others concentrate on your Startups, but I already see a few problematic entries: TeaTimer, napster.exe, realsched.exe, jusched.exe, QTTask.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, etc.

    Hi Caliban,

Thanks for the advice, I have Run the Files and Registry clean ups as suggested. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped my problem, but like you say it's good to have a clean up.

    Cheers :)
