white house been on top of this for 7-8 hours now. and they decide to let loose right plop in the middle of the apprentice?!

Hehe, there were a lot of shows on. Not just Trumps. That would just be silly considering the news was so much more important than anything on that silly show.

 

I think it depends on what part of the country you live in. The apprentice has been over for hours at my house.

What the?! Since when is Michigan EAST of NYC?!

Coverage started around 1040 ET here; Obama's speech around 1140 ET.

Even if MI is on "midwest prime time" (i.e. Apprentice 8-10 instead of 9-11 on the coasts), you STILL must have lost 20 mins! Coverage would have started around 940 your time.

It only gets WORSE as you head west. Mountain and Pacific zones would have lost the show in its entirety.

HI and AK have a shot at seeing it *AFTER* the coverage winds up, but I doubt NBC will go ahead with it at this point.

There is NO part of the country which would have wrapped up the show in time. Except maybe Puerto Rico.

Well, considering coverage did not start (to my knowledge) until almost midnight...Granted, I was not watching The Apprentice as I think it's an incredibly stupid and annoying program, but we did have the TV on, and there was nothing but regular programming until well after the 11:00 news. There's really no need to get so excited about it.

obama's speech began at 1140 ET. NBC cut in -- nationally -- at 1040 ET. depending which part of MI you're in, that means either 1040 or 940 locally.

if coverage did not start "until almost midnight" in your particular house, perhaps you were watching a toaster, not a TV.

Except for a small part of the western end of the Upper Peninsula, we're all EST in Michigan, though why the oddity of the designation, I have no idea.

And it did not start until 11:30 for us either.

 

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph the Carpenter! 11:40PM is pretty much the definition of "almost midnight". Nor was I watching NBC, nor was I at home. Where I was, there are approximately 800 channels to choose from, so I'm sorry we chose to watch something other than NBC. Get over yourself, for pity's sake.

no personal attacks here; i'm just saying your analysis is faulty. 1140 may be the definition of "almost midnight", but coverage in most of MI began at 1040! ...and cut into the apprentice, same as everywhere east of you. this is easy to confirm googling the various affiliates.

Any newsworthy event deserves to be broadcast immediately due to thousands of people who lost their lives on 9/11 and for their loved ones. President Obama showed a lot of compassion in delivering this news as soon as he could for the reasons he mentioned. For heavens sake the address to the nation just lasted at the most 10 minutes.

It was a message that most Americans ( and the world) would want to hear immediately rather than be shoved to the next day in to please people who rather want to see some of their favorite shows.

Thousands of people died because of that Bin Laden, not just in the USA but also worldwide. Count also the current wars in Afghanistan and other countries where thousands American and Allied soldiers died because of that monster. And don't forget Al Qaeda attacks on London, Madrid and some other places I forgot. They and their loved ones all deserve compassion.

i cannot for the life of me understand the white house delaying the announcement 5-6 hours just to bump trump. mark my words, some staffer is gonna be in deep you-know-what 2 months from now when it comes out who made the decision.

otoh, i'll give obama credit for a great job at the foreign correspondents' dinner. trump was a real sourpuss not laughing at any of that.

 

I think most of you missed the pre-broadcast where the AP was telling us that the president was obligated to call the world leaders and the members of his cabinet immediately and notify them before making the public announcement.

I think most people who talk about what the president "should" do have no idea what his professional obligations are, or anything entailed in being the leader of a nation. The operation happened around midnight Their time, which is only 3pm our time.

So, Logistically the operation had to happen, the troops needed to withdraw, the body's Identity needed to be identified, the world leaders and the members of congress needed to be notified and THEN they made the announcement THAT night instead of waiting until morning.

He did it exactly right and you people really need to get off it. Nothing in this thread about the president waiting, or interrupting trump (because does anyone even WATCH Trump?) is even vaguely educated. It's all I hate the president nonsense.

You are an American, and he is your president. Show some respect.

 

If there was a delay in the announcement it must have been for good reason. I don't think that the White House would have thought for one fricking moment about Trump and his *reality* show. They had more important stuff on their mind.

The White House likely had to finalize some important stuff regarding this most important event prior to BO's television address.

A) fox news was the only channel to AVOID the birther story. so i suppose i should spend more time on CNN, MSNBC etc where trump was running 24/7?

B) i don't watch the apprentice. i just found it ironic obama would stoop to trying to derail it.

C) "sad" and "tragic" should be reserved for figures like cindy sheehan. obama is going to face a huge challenge from his LEFT this time.

i stand corrected. it is now clear that obama did not "stall" the press conference until sunday night. if anything, he RUSHED to do it during trump, a full 12 or more hours before he had even been briefed himself!

i hadn't referenced media speculation, tho. i've been refering quite specifically to the content of that sunday night speech, and to brennan's follow-up the next day fleshing out the "details". almost ALL of which have turned out to be false!

fog of war is one thing, but this is ridiculous. how does any official say "bin laden was armed, hid behind a woman, and died in a firefight" if no one at the scene had reported any of that?!
