Lets say we are installing the following operating systems on different computers without manually partitioning.

How much HDD space in GB is used by each OS after a fresh install?
    Mac OS X 10 =?
    Ubuntu = 4?
    Windows XP =?
    Windows Vista =?
    Windows 7 =?

For windows 7. If you uninstall some of the junk, and delete the ability to do restore points, then it will be somewhere under 15gb. I have read about people who say it is around 50gb, this is not true. These people are using windows 7 backup restore points, and also should note that after you update your windows 7 with it's updater, then that will add to your space as well. Now on another note if you want to keep this ultra low space usage, then you will have to go through every area of your computer and disable the ability to accumulate any history, I would even go as far as to prevent favorites, minimize shortcuts, etc..............Of course this is only my opinion, I'm sure there is more that others have to say about the matter.

http://www.blackviper.com/ This site is supposed to be the best at showing you how to run on the base programs that are needed vs. what they tell you is needed.

A question though, why are you asking this? If we knew the reason then maybe we could give you a more fulfilling answer.

Hi brahman. I am just curious. I'd like to know if an average Joe user got a PC; how much space is taken up after a fresh install of the aforementioned operating systems (no tweaking involved). Cheers.

    Hi, My rough estimates--No tweaking.

I just did a fresh install of Win7. Now, I've have updated to SP1 and added Office so my numbers will include that extra 1gb. I've added only a few other programs.

From what I can tell my Win7 is showing as taking up 15.25gb. Recycle Bin is reserving 4.5gb and System Restore is reserving 1.75gb (So that is 6.25gb for those two which could be reduced). So Win7 fresh install takes about ~8-9gb out of box with SP1.

I know when I first installed win7 in late 2009 it quickly consumed a total of about 20gb within a few months. After a year+ it was about 23gb with very little personal data on that drive. So my rule of thumb for a Win7 partition is 50gb minimum to leave about half the space free for breathing room.

WinXP SP3 takes between ~2.5-4gb for a fresh install. Not sure how much of that is reserved for System Restore and Recycle Bin since I usually install XP only on 10-20gb partitions for testing purposes.

I never installed Vista but I guess it would be closer to Win7 in size than to XP.

This is my XP3. I keep it cleaned up.
    9.57 GB-C drive
    6.67 GB-Windows
    1.08 GB-Doc & Settings
    1.01 GB-Programs
    1.0 BB- Other
If I cleaned out all my Outlook Express. Cleaned Temps and History. Removed all but one restore point. Defraged my HD ,Page Files. and registry, removed pictures and music; I would be down to 9.27 or less GB on my C drive. I keep a clean mean machine.

    Hi Oneeyejack.

Are you using an SSD? Why only 40gb drive?

Hi brahman!! No sir , not SSD. 40GB is for my OS. I have 3 partitions. It's a 100GB drive. I'm a simple man with a simple plan. I have two Seagate external USB's that I store back up images of my OS and pictures.
