It's nice knowing what you want to do.

I live on Long Island, and I really want to be a police officer. My choices are Nassau County or Suffolk County.

Nassau
Pros:

• I live there
• It's slightly safer
• I can take the exam at 17, right out of high school

Cons:

• Salary is lower ($34k to start, $108k after 8 years)

Suffolk
Pros:

• Salary is higher ($42k to start, $108k after 5 years)

Pros:

• I don't live there (but it's close, like a 15-20 minute drive)
• There are more rough areas
• I have to wait until 19 to take the exam.

My ultimate goal is to be a homicide detective.

This thread should be entitled "Thinking about joining the Police." I don't know why you'd want to join the police straight from high school anyway?Your an intelligent guy and your parents aren't short of money so go to college, get your a degree in computers or something then read the police pamphlet again.

Agreed with Tim. In this dog-eat-dog world, any advantage you can get may prove the tipping point. Having that diploma in your hand when you venture into today's job markets can be a huge factor.

 

You stop enjoying it as much when your hobby becomes your job.:-D
