I'm wonder if the tutor for diagnosing one's Hijack log file in the sticky threads is still available. I can't seem to find it.

    Hi

Its still HERE however Hijackthis is not a great app and many are over reliant on it as a cure all, the best option if you have malware is to run the full malware guide below.

As malware is sneaky these days and a quote from Chaslang our resident malware expert is below on Hijackthis.

So running the full Majorgeeks malware read me guide is paramount in aiding the removal of malware on a PC.

Thanks chaslang. I do use the malware programs as suggested but just like to take a look at my HJT log periodically. :)

    You're welcome.
It does not hurt to look at it as long as you know what you are doing, but just be aware that it shows very little and that most of the problems we deal with are never seen in HJT including most of todays hijackers.

Out of curiosity, then why are we posting so many HJT logs when there are possible malware problems?

We aren't! Read are guidelines again. This is why we, and many other forums have started following our lead, don't ask for them. We have many other more important required steps and we automatically embed a scan from HijackThis into our MGtools program just incase there is something useful we can do with it. Many websites also now use other tools that provide equivalents of HJT with much more additional info. We have MGtools which provides us with lots of important data ( way more than just HJT ). But we also require real malware scanners to be run ( SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ) and then we suppliment these with scans from ComboFix and RootRepeal which frequently show things that antivirus and malware scanners miss.

Also, this is the reason why you could not easliy find the HJT tutorial nor do you see any of the stickies for running HJT or posting logs. We stopped asking for HJT logs more than 3 years ago and removed the stickies then because it was totally inadequate then. And since TrendMicro took it over and basically did nothing to enhanced, it has outlived most of its usefullness.

I guess I must be a little behind in this area probably because I follow what you suggest and don't have problems. This is what I'm running now in my XP Pro, SP3 system and was wondering if perhaps I have too much spyware:

    Comodo firewall and AV

Spyware Blaster, SuperAntiSpyware (free), Malwarebytes, Spybot, CCleaner, and aswclr. Thanks again for all the help you provide.

Is Malwarebytes also the free version? Note the CCleaner is not a malware scanner.
Also, the Avast Cleaner you mentioned is very old and it is just a specialty scanner that only looked for a very small set of older infections. It is really not worth running it unless you are known to have one of those infections.

Yes, Malwarebytes is the free version along with all the others. Am I covered fairly well?

SInce Comodo has built-in spyware protection too, you should be okay. Make sure that you keep SpywareBlaster updated and also keep Spybot update and reimmunize after each update. And since SAS and MBAM are just the free scanners, be sure to update them everytime before you run a scan. These scanners can update their databases several times per day.
