    Hi

I have a few of questions about Windows 7, which I’ve just started using.
    1. I’ve bought a new PC with Windows 7 pre-installed on it. Why don’t I get a DVD with the Windows 7 programme on it?

    2. If I bought a copy of Windows 7 on a DVD from a retailer could I re-install Windows if I have a problem from that DVD or can that only be done from the recovery disks I’ve had to create?

    3. I thought in Europe, Windows had to give me a choice of internet browser. When I first started up my new PC I wasn’t ask to choose a browser, IE8 was automatically installed.
    Thanks

1: MSFT, in their infinite wisdom, decided years ago that, as part of their deal with the big PC makers, that the makers were allowed to pre-install Windows and if they didn't supply a real install/recovery disc, they could provide a means for the customer to create it - or a means to recover Windows.

    2: Yes.

3: Windows can't easily access the 'net to download the chosen browser without first having a browser installed to use. The Browser Choice screen is available via an optional Windows update.

Too polite to say what I really think about that. I know MSFT referes to Microsoft but what do those four letters actually stand for?

OK. It did happen during a Windows Update. However, it means IE is still bundled in with Windows and it was my understanding they'd agreed with the EU not to do this. Was mainly acting as agent provocateur with this question. I already knew which browser I wanted.

It stands for Microsoft, it's the acronym given for the company as listed on the Stock Exchanges. MS might refer to other companies, medical ailments, etc., depending on context.

As it's bundled with the OS so that you can easily make your own choice and download your preferred web browser, and you can 'hide' IE via the "Programs and features > Turn Windows components on or off" once done, that is probably enough of a compromise to satisfy the bods over at the EU.
