    Hello,

Firstly let me explain how my computers are set up in my house so it's easier for you to get a better picture.

I have a broadband connection coming into my home plugged into a modem and directed through a router. I have 1 desktop pc which is connected direct to the modem and 2 other seperate laptops which run off the wireless connection.

Just recently I had some family stay over and allowed them to use the desktop pc freely throughout the week and after they had left I found the pc had 38 viruses including some worms, trojans and keyloggers.

Straight away I burnt a recovery disk on one of the laptops containing software such as spybot S&D and malwarebytes anti-malware and started to one by one remove the pests.

After about 4 hours I was still suffering from heavy browser hijacks and false desktop alerts so decided to go for a full system recovery.

What is worrying me though the most is I have a friend who told me that due to the fact that the laptops both connect through the same internet connection as the desktop pc that any passwords that I have entered throughout the week of the viruses been active have possibly been read by the viruses on the "network".

This is really scary for me as the laptops are used for shopping, banking, paypal transfers between family, ebay etc and I am now concerned that the keyloggers have managed to steal my information through the wi-fi.

I do have a very good router though with password protection but I am still in the dark on this one.

Do you think this sort of situation is possible or is it my friend trying to put the wind up me?

    Thanks

If your router was infected, all computers connected to it would have shown symptoms of the infection. Since they didn't, it would be safe to assume the other computers are clean. So you could use them to go online and change all your passwords. ;)

    Thanks for the quick reply.

So now the computer as gone through a fresh installation of windows there is no way anyone is still attached to the network, no possibilty of being watched?

Right, if you did a reformat and clean install, no malware would be left on your system. That is unless you reinstalled anything from a back up that might have been infected. ;)

No I used the OEM disks to do a fresh installation of windows.

Can passwords be read then through wireless?

Only it someone was accessing your router. Is your router secure? Do you have File sharing enabled? A keylogger could read your keystrokes, but not after you reinstalled, only if you did a repair install. A full reformat and clean install with your OEM disc would have wiped everything.

I have a router with WPAK2 or something like that which requires a password with a mixture of letters and numbers

Then you shouldn't worry about it. I would recommend that you still get online and change all your online passwords just to be on the safe side. ;)
