Finally got a new ASUS P8P67 Pro mobo to replace my DOA MSI board. No one wanted to replace it during the Intel HDD fiasco.:mad Anyways, got the sucker running @ stock for the moment, 3.4GHz.

Both my CPU's are running Rosetta ATM so don't expect much from me until the end of the month. Still, I added a 9800GT now and will add the 460GTX tomorrow, too tired ATM.

Once I install my Hyper 212+ HS/F, should be easily able to OC that puppy to 4.5 GHz+.

Watch out guys!:p:-D Fold on my brotha's!:)

    Nice stuff Augie

I will be looking forward to watching the difference in your PPD when you get folding @ 4.5Ghz with that 2600k.

And regarding the 212+, I finally found it on the egg, and it's $30 there as well. so I'll be grabbing one myself. After watching every video I could find on youtube of installing them, I am pretty confident that it will cram into my tiny case for now, as long as it clears the top-mounted PSU. I've sat here with a measuring tape for a good half hour and the dimensions listed on newegg. I should have 1/2"-3/4" inch clearance everywere, I'm hoping. :-D

and either way it's only temporary.

On a folding note, I'm finally finished the first 10 SMP's and will start getting my bonus. That was so long :zzz

    Well damn it.;)
Now I'm going to have to raid my super-secret-rainy-day-I'm-broke fund.

Good going augie. That mobo fiasco really put the hurting on you I know. Hope the temps are as good as I've read about with that chip.

Great news on the folding Nico_Palm. Points will change for the better now.

  4. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Wow man, that's real tight!:eek As to the bonus, I believe it only applies to SMP2 with -bigadv flag set and less than a 4 day turnaround which means you're not eligible as that takes an i7 920+ @ 3.8GHz minimum to accomplish it. At least, since you're folding with a passkey now, you'll be all set when you upgrade.:)

LOL @ fund.:-D Ya on the hurting, looking at $1K+ worth every day of useless hardware for 3 months really tested my patience!:mad So I decided to say buh-bye to MSI and hello again to my favourite brand, ASUS.:) Here's a snip of my current stock setup, as you can see the stock Intel HS/F just keeps it at 70C, which I won't go over on any machine. That's my line in the sand.

Anyways, going to RMA the MSI and see if I can sell it, I missed their free offer of shipping by one day.:banghead

ahh, good to know. I'm still figuring most of this stuff out lol. I know right now it's running SMP2's using the a3 and a4 cores.

Is there any difference between -bigadv and -advmethods? and would my little beast be able to handle -advmethods instead? because these WU's are giving me 8-day deadlines and i'm done in 20 hours.

    @Nico_Palm

The i7 -bigadv WU's are Not the same WU's as duel core/quad core cpu's of lesser capabilities, which we run because our cpu's will not complete the task in the alloted time frame.

should you choose to add/insert the extra flag -bigadv it will most likely be ignored and -advmethods is needed for our puny cpu's to get what we can.

an example would be the 481 pointer you have done should be over 1,000 points now since you have finished your 10 WU's.

The below three items listed below are the main items that allow us to receive smp2 WU's

*Acceptable size of work assignment and work result packets (bigger units may have large memory demands) -- 'small' is <5MB, 'normal' is <10MB, and 'big' is >10MB (small/normal/big) [big]?

*Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced scientific cores and/or work units if available (no/yes) [yes]?

*Additional client parameters. Use space to clear. [-smp -verbosity 9]?

    fold on

Wow man @ 8 Teslas! What are they now, some $1.5K each? I haven't seen anyone folding with one though, apparently way too costly for the PPD.

@thefool Hey, jump right in man, the water's fine.;) We need more -bigadv folk!:major

  10. lbmest

    lbmest MajorGeek

    Well join right in guy.
That set up running -bigadv 24/7 would net you more PPD than I am getting since I'm at 3.8. Have to make sure the OC is folding stable though, which is a bear some times.
Folding stable means the process will find the smallest inconsistencies and crash the work unit even though Prime 95 and other testing apps indicate no problems.

Hmm, got my GTX 460 going so there's some 12.7K PPD more but I can't get the 9800 going for some reason, another 4K PPD. :banghead At least the CPU is humming along very nicely.:)

Bah! Installed the Hyper 212+ and the heat's way up!!:cry Going to take it apart and clean it, I must have done something wrong as most folks easily get to 4.6GHz with the hyper. I'm glad I don't mount mobos in a case before I OC them properly. Here's what I got at stock @ %100 load. Disgusting eh?:mad

    That sucks man. :(

A 5+ degree gain cant be right going from a stock cooler to the 212+.

I know you already know this, but my only input is that the thermal compound isnt doing it's job properly and needs a closer look I suspect.

She's gonna make you work for it lol ;)

Well, got -bigadv going @ %80 load because of the heat. I can't find my little tube of goop so the re-install of the HS/F will have to wait. Got it OC'd to 4.43GHz for now and a respectable time and points considering the circumstances.

There is lots of information about the i7 core which for me while researching was information over load, but I have learned much including the "k" on 2600k indicates unlocked everything, plus this is second generation technology.
I was contemplating on the LGA socket 1155 or 1366,from all data gathered and considered I lean towards the LGA socket 1155 (also shown in your pic),but as soon as I can afford (save up) the funds to purchase this jewel of a cpu,the 6 core will be out.:cry:drool

From your post I now know setting this cpu to 4Ghz will be a breeze, thx. augie, just think if you could keep it cooled @100% :cool:dancer

I believe this is what I shall use once I purchase the i7 2600k...

  19. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

You mean the AMD or the Intel hexacore? There's quite a differance price wise.:eek As to paste, Arctic Silver 5 is reputed to be the best but I'm not a benchmark person, I wonder what the spread is between the top and bottom pastes? Are the top ones really worth it? Something I'll look into. I do like the Noctua fans.:cool

The link posted though some years old (2 or 3) shows the benchmark results.

What got my attention about Noctua's NT-H1 therma paste are these two paragraphs:
plus I learned of this thermal paste from either reading @[H]ard|OCP or OverClockers,I'm sure there are better performimg thermal pastes around, but this may be what I use, won't know until it happens.

Just for debates sake, I use IC Diamond and can barely get over 50 degrees celcius with my stock heatsink, and fan @ 40% (1850rpm) running Intel Burn-In.

It's all I use. i tried AS5, but my temps went up instead of down, even after four re-applies.

Unfortunately, now my memory doesn't want to work!:cry:banghead I moved it from the dead MSI board and didn't check the QVL first, though there were plenty G.Skill memory listed, just not mine. The memory did work for a while and wasn't volted at all.:confused Maybe I should just chuck all this in the garbage and build an AMD x6 machine instead.;)

Check bios updates. ASUS had boatloads of memory adds in newer bios for my board.

  27. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

The P8P67 Pro stops the boot if it's bad or not compatible, the led comes on, I even hit the check mem switch and it went through its routine of checking. As to a BIOS update, I can't even boot to BIOS so that's out. I cleared the BIOS(no go) and will try removing the battery for 10 minutes, that's my last gasp effort before I RMA the sticks.*sigh* I'll get something different as the current sticks are still not on the latest QVL, I probably inadvertently fried them.:(

  28. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Strangest thing just happened, I tried one more time with the Mushkin and now they both work but in slots a2/b2 and not in b1/b2 as is stated and a1/b1 are dead, time to RMA this board me thinks.

However, it's only OC'd to 3.6 ATM and nothing that I did different from yesterday either, it just clocked down on its own.:confused Going to run it overnight and see what happens, I'm not liking the temps either with the Hyper, 60C @%80 load even though it's warm here for once! 80F outside.

  29. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

gO FIGURE! Strangely enough, I got it back to 4.43GHz and it's only at 65 to 70C now instead of 85 to 90C! I guess I really screwed up the install on the Hyper the first time!:-o:confused Plus it's quite warm here ATM, some 85 inside whereas yesterday was some 70. I'll send this board back as soon as I have completed a couple of -bigadv WU's. I wanna see what this puppy can do!:cool

Thanks, did give me grief for a bit there. I'm still not out of the woods though. Ya on volts, one guy I saw had the same as me but was getting 46K PPD, what's with that?!:confused I'm still at 30K.:cry He's now at 4.841GHz and 1.41V. Anyways, I'll wait and see what happens this week. I'll leave it it be for now.

So are you just running stock volts then, or did you give her a bit of juice to hit 4.7?

  35. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Boosted it to 1.38V for 4.7 but it wasn't as stable as I thought, WU crapped out at %32! Once I get my A/C in next couple of days, I'll try again @ 4.7 with a bit more juice, it's just too warm in here ATM. What a beauty of a day though!:cool

  36. Nico_Palm

    Nico_Palm Specialist

Yep, it's been nothing but sunshine and hot here as well. My CPU is running a good 5 degrees warmer than a couple weeks ago. I'm still below 55 degrees though so nothing to worry about.

That sucks about the WU, part in parcel with the territory I suppose. More problems, more fun :p

  37. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Hahaha! True enough. I just went back one multiplier to 46 so 4.6GHZ and the same WU is at %50 now. I'm at my limit as far as temps go as I personally don't want to pass 70C, that's my line in the sand.

I might get rid of my Hyper 212+ and replace it with a H50 as it's still doing a good job on my 930 right now despite the heat and the 930 pushes more heat than the 2600. Your temps are just fantastic!

  38. Nico_Palm

    Nico_Palm Specialist

    Not for long :-D

The new board is sitting in its box in front of me begging me to put it in. I just dont feel like swapping motherboards atm. I'll probably wait until I grab the GPU and put both in at once.

Either way, the extra volts I plan on feeding it will probably push me up into the 65 degree range. Core Temp and Real Temp state my TjMax as 100 degrees. Intel says dont go above 75, and I think I side with intel on that one.

If you can, run everything on a bench. Everything installed too, one just needs to know which pins to short to start her up!;)

On a side note, got my A/C today but not installed yet. I got it hooked up in the living room and take short 5 min. shots of cool blissfulness.:cloud9:-D Too bad we can't save some of the cold to help us in the summer. Whew! 88 here ATM.

Got the A/C in this evening and it is glorious!:cool However, I still won't fold GPU's, not worth the bucks to take that heat out. ;)

Got meself one of these from CT. A very nice machine indeed.:) I was just boiling here this afternoon.:eek

You shouldn't have lost a WU because of the power out.:confused BTW, those T-storms just missed us to the west, I was about ready to shut everything down.

  42. Nico_Palm

    Nico_Palm Specialist

Yea I had shut her all down for a bit, then once the storm was mostly over, I booted back up and started folding again. Within about 15 minutes the power went out. Upon restart of the folding client it said "Gromacs cannot continue any further, dumping current WU and continuing' in the log. :confused

The worst part is that it was at 97% :-D

WOW that is amazing Augie and congrats on getting the new mobo, FINALLY!

Your WEI score is good and getting close to mine, IF I had your CPU and mobo I would hit 7.9 across the board bit alas my CPU is the anchor in my PC at present, OK its a quad core Intel and works great but I think to Fold and compute a bit better I may need to think upgrade ;)

    LMAO Augie ;)

Yeah I need to read up on bigdav as last time I tried it I bogged down and it did nothing in producing % of WUs but willing to give it a new try as I know that their is a new GUI app to manage this.

Still I may go with a new mobo and CPU same RAM and other HW and possibly H2O cooling but my current cooling running F@H general CPU folding is only hitting 36c right now with an ambient of 27c

Hey have a great weekend and plenty of :wine

What's taskman telling you? No way you're folding a -bigadv ATM with 36C! There's nothing to read up on -bigadv, your machine has to be OC'd to 3.8GHz min. before you can deliver those bad boys in time.

I don't understand what you mean by 'bogged down'. Maybe start a new thread to help everyone out.;)

Augie. hell noooooo I bow down to your knowledge in this area and others as I dont know it well enough to get the most out of my PC, I'm not going to OC as I need stability in this main desktop but I have a Core2Duo used as a WHS2011 box that could be used for folding but I would guess that C2D is not best for bigdav?

I will review this over the weekend as to where I'm at with F@H, just tipped into the top 40 in MG list! yay go me! :major
