Need help knowing which of these processors are better:

    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500 quad-core processor [3.3GHz, 6MB cache]

    AMD Phenom(TM) II X6 1075T six-core processor [3.0GHz, 3MB L2 + 6MB L3 shared, up to 4000MHz]

    Thanks for any help.

This begs the question, what are you going to use it for? I like the Intel but the AMD ain't too shabby either! I'd buy the AMD hexacore if I didn't already have my i7's. Another thing to consider is that AMD should come out with an AM3 compatible octocore so no need to get a new mobo, still too far away to say for sure.

I want it to be able to handle popular MMOs. I dont play often, none of the super intense end game stuff, but I do want a pleasent experience for what I get to play.

either cpu will do more than enought for you. I would concentrate on graphics and ram as the differentiating factors in your experience.

The AMD quad should be fine for that, famous last words.:-D What are you looking at as far as a graphics card is concerned, that's the biggest thing for games, more than CPU?

    BTW, I'm not a gamer.;)

Either cpu would be fine. As others have stated, your GPU is going to really matter. Though, my question would be, what resolution are ye wanting to play at? Also, size of the monitor. If you are using little 24" monitors, then 1920 x 1080 (1200) resolution is easy to push with medium range GPUs. Such as the GTX 570. If you want to go 30" then you need to use the more powerful cards, like GTX 580 or the amd equivalent 5970.

What really matters is how much money you want to spend.

    Can choose between these two:

1GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce 405 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter]

1GB DDR3 AMD Radeon HD 6450 [DVI, HDMI. VGA adapter]

Im just tinkering with making a desktop on hp.com between $750-$850ish

    Thanks again for the input.

Looks good, just make sure that you have enough power for that GPU and don't go cheap either, call it 600W.

600 is good. From the specs on those cards, 400 watts is the minimum.

Why note build your own system. You'll get more bang for the buck.

Only a 300W supply is an available option, is that something I can have upgraded later?
$800 bucks sounds fair to me, not sure how better a system I can have for that price than what I am looking at from hp? If the same money can buy me a considerably better machine then maybe I should look into that.. though Im not really familiar with building a system.

Generally no. Those power supplies are proprietary.

It's not that you'll have much better of a system, it's that you'll have one that is completely upgradeable by you - you won't be locked into hp proprietary parts. If you want to do a cpu upgrade later, good luck doing that on an HP. On a home build pc, it's very easy.

well, my old P4 beats the pants off my old Athlon x64. they were both 2.4Ghz I believe.

I've been an Intel man ever since.

But Intel is rough on the wallet, the motherboards and processors are both more expensive than their AMD counterparts but I personally find them to be a bit quicker Mhz for Mhz based on the models that i've owned in the past.

AMD is good for builders on a tight budget that want bang for their buck, and have alot better compatibility with past and possibly future products as Augie has mentioned.

Some people love AMD, and some people love Intel, but in the end what really matters is how much you are looking to spend on building your rig.

Long live the Intel vs. AMD debate :-D

As for 4 vs. 6 cores, most programs barely utilize 4 cores let alone 6. 4 cores should be plenty unless you plan on doing some heavy, multi-threaded work with the machine.

    Just my 2 cents :)

Heres a complete PC with good specs for under 700. Just shows what you can build on your own.
