So the wife's computer recently has some issues with some Malware on it. I have that pretty much taken care of thanks to the help of the Malware section of this site. During the process of trying to get the Malware removed the computer screen has a complete white background, except for a small section behind my icons. Tried fixing it through the desktop customize feature but that did not work. The Malware people suggested posting this issue over in this section. Can anyone help me?

The comuter is a Dell..... running Windows XP.

    Hi

Have you tried creating a new profile (user account) to see if the issue is the same? If not, that would be a good first step. If that does work, it might be easier to move all personal files, etc. to the new account.

I am thinking more in the lines of the video driver been corrupted during either the initial infection or the removal of it.....

as you say you have a dell machine can you supply us with its service tag (it should be on a sticker at the back or on the side of the tower) if you can't find it ... download and install everest....

run it and post the log .... remove your ip address as it will be shown in the log ....

Just for future reference the O is actualy a Zero ;) .....

right there is three different types of driver available for your system so you will need to go to... Start> rightclick Computer> Properties> Hardware> Device Manager> Display Adapters and note what type of driver your system is using .... go here.....

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...abIndex=&scanSupported=True&scanConsent=False

download the driver you need and save it to your desktop, do not run it yet....
go back into the device manager and uninstall the display driver, follow prompts of the uninstall .... do not reboot if it asks... go back to your desktop and run the display driver by double clicking on it... follow the prompts for the install when finished restart your machine so that your system recognises the changes.

let me know the outcome, hopefully this resolve the graphics issue.

I am having a small problem completing your instructions. I downloaded the driver from dell (82865G) on to my desktop and go to uninstall the old one. When I go to uninstall it, it says that I need to restart my computer for the changes to take effect - I tell it not to restart. When I go to start up the new driver I get part way through the installation and an "unkown error" occurs and it exits me from the set up process.

Ok, when you uninstall the old driver let your machine reboot... upon windows restart you will encounter the Found New Hardware prompt click out of this then install the driver from the desktop.

I have to go for now and will not be able to assist until tomorrow, I will check in first thing in the morning to see if you need any more advice.

Okay, did everything you suggested and the driver was installed but it didn't help at all.

Have you tried this solution that mcsmc suggested ?? would it be possible for you to test the monitor on another system or try another monitor on your system to rule out the monitor being the issue. Does the issue occur whilst you are in safemode (F8 at start up).

In 2K, I get a white background when Active Desktop is turned off. See if turning it on in XP helps.
    Code:

Check my desktop and it was already set to active desktop so that wasn/t the problem. I managed to fix the issue by setting up a new user account. Now I am in the process of moving my files over for one account to the other. I am not quite sure the most effective method to do this so I might try and get some help. What forum would that topic be best posted under?

Thanks for the update, I am pleased that you found a solution/fix for your issue ;). You are in the correct area to get help in the transferring of all of your data. I am sure it is a simple task, I know that programs that you have installed just need for you to run their set up .exe in your new user acc.
