In the UK recently there has been a big stink regarding a footballer "Ryan Giggs" who'd cheated on his wife and got an injunction against the media, the woman who he had an affair with and regular people who mentioned his name or the affair. The injunction was upheld and I believe a few people were locked up 'I could be wrong' for spouting it and these people were held in SECRET so their trial was not in the public arena like all other trials.

Following the info being leaked 70-80,000 people tweeted his name meaning 'in the UK' at least they were liable to go to jail.:-D 'LULZ@twitter affecting real life' :-D I don't care about the gossip but our privacy laws are ridiculous,I've read that Obama passed the 'Speech' laws in the US.

This was brought in to specifically stop our courts and maybe others enforcing injunctions against American citizens which is totally right IMO.

So do you agree or disagree famous people should have this kind of privacy and protection from the courts? If not should they be allowed any privacy at all?

Should a regular person be allowed to reveal all the private details about someone else's life? If an Ex partner ect. began to reveal every embarrassing details about your life should they be stopped?

I think they're more than welcome to have their privacy protected...just as long as I, as a non-famous person, am accorded the same courtesy.

The thing is...if you choose to live your life in a public arena, you can't edit out the parts you don't want people to talk about.

Fine line as on one hand, they need the press coverage that goes with their fame, but on the other hand, most fight pretty hard to keep their privacy. Anyone in public life must deal with pubicity while in public, but everyone deserves some privacy around their family life.

So which would you go with, free speech or privacy? If one of your ex friends ect. began to publish intimate details about your life on the internet through spite should they be stopped? Or should the internet be free?

I don't know the answer on this so I don't have an opinion, that's why I'm asking.

Yup I agree with you, family privacy behind closed doors should be enjoyed by everyone.

That actually falls under the slander laws. If what is posted is true and provable, it's not slander. Just like the video's of famous people in bed. You just can't trust your ex's!!! :-D

    I wouldn't know:-D

I mean true things that are intimate, private, embarrassing that would affect your life or maybe your career.

What if someone started and financed a campaign to spread your private affairs, all of which are true? Is it you fault for doing them 'indulging in lots of cake for example':-D

If one day a stranger throws a an egg at you or people hound you on the street after recognising you from the internet do you deserve it?

    What TimW said. :)

No, really. I will defend the right to free speech to the death, with the exception of when it hurts others, compromises safety, or gives away military plans in time of war. If one of my exes wants to give away private details on the internet or otherwise, so be it. I did it, I'll own it. If I did something that can adversely affect my career or life, then maybe I should have made better choices.

Before it seems like that would be easy to say, I have done a few things that have actually brought certain career paths to a halt for me. I have to live with the consequences of my actions, and while I don't volunteer the information, I also don't deny it if it comes out. If someone chooses to tell the world about something I've done, and they have proof (which is really not that hard to come by), I have no right to tell them they aren't allowed to do so.

What I read in the article Rikky posted was 'alleged'. I'm assuming there weren't any facts concerning the guy's affair.

I think we have a huge problem going on with 24/7 media. They are using the 'Right to Free Speech' mantra constantly to spread gossip about the private lives of public figures because they need to fill all that air time. It's gone from the media actually reporting relevant news to looking for dirty little secrets to share with the public saying it is our right to know. Why do we have a right to know that so in so cheated on their spouse? Why is gossip all the sudden considered free speech?

I don't think someone making their money off of the public watching them play soccer equates to it being free speech to spread rumors about them having an affair. And what of the person who's name is being dragged out there who is not a public figure?

Personally, I'm sick and tired of all the trash our so called main stream media 'reports'. I find it all despicable how much the public is interested in all the dysfunctional lives of celebrities. While I am a proponent of Free Speech and Information...I do not think everything in people's lives should fall under that category.

Totally agree Laura. If it's none of your business you have no reason to say anything. Probably applies to some You Tube videos I watch also

This is a good example of just one of the huge amount of legal grey areas surrounding the internet.

If someone publishes something in a newspaper that is private information, true or not, in many cases the paper can be sued.
But some yahoo on the internet posts it and it's ignored.

As some of you said, a famous person has to realise they are in the public spotlight, right or wrong this is fact.

What it boils down to is how lame people are who need to spread gossip as fast and wide as possible. Legallities don't really come into it because the web is too vast and too much annonymity. It is comparable to dropping 1 lone cop in the middle of London and saying "Yeah keep an eye out".

Whatever the laws, the internet will find a way around them. For instance, if some info is illegal to share in the US alone, then anyone posting from and on a server that is not US based are breaking no laws.

People just need to concentrate on thier own lives rather than worrying about whether or not thier favourite TeleTubbie is a coke fiend and had a night in a hotel with Barney and some hookers from Sesame Street.

    Who cares!!!

To Mr.Ryan Giggs.... You are a credible football player, that is all you are to me, I don't give a flying feck who you slept with or cheated on. The only thing I care about is whether or not you play well when playing with a team I am supporting.

    Message Ends."

Another good example I guess is wiki leaks, its practically the same thing there's always gonna be someone who will leak the info anonymously and there will always be a website to post the information anonymously.

Going to war with the internet is a losing ballgame IMO.

Frankly? This shouldn't be an issue. Why? Because it shouldn't be public that he was banging whoever else it was. It's no one's business but his, his wife and the person in question.

He shouldn't have needed to have an injunction to keep all the nosy jerks out of his private business. We've become far too concerned about what other people are doing instead of dealing with our own issues.
