Well i have a new server, and its really overkill so im gonna throw the extra cpu cycles at folding. Its gonna run some form of nix, so any tips or suggestions would be great. Its got two Xeon 3.06 ghz processors with 4 gigs of ram.

Assuming 24/7 operation and 64-bit capable with 64-bit OS -

Client to install - Linux (x86) and BSD *combined uniprocessor (CPU) and SMP2 client* (64-bit build) - http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download

Installation guide - Linux SMP Client Installation Guide - http://folding.stanford.edu/English/LinSMPGuide
(I'm a nix noob so someone else would have to respond if you run into problems.)

How important a server? Folding releases the CPU resources very readily for normal work but in configuring you might want to go with a 80% or 90% CPU utilization to start with just to see how things run.
Also, is cooling adequate? I assume no overclocking will be involved but you should monitor temps for awhile to make sure everything is good.
HFM is an excellent monitoring application. Can be gotten here - http://code.google.com/p/hfm-net/

How can i check the stats of what my linux client has folded, it has submitted one wu already tho! BTW Nico, i have folded before, so you are the FNG :) Its just been a while sence i last had spare cpu horsepower.

HFM does *nix and networking.;) OK, so you are the old new guy then.:-D

    lol you got me :-D

I usually check the stats here, although they are usually 3-6 hours behind. They do give quite a few interesting statistics to browse through though to see where you stack up against everyone else.

Isn't there some kind of written html file i can browse to? Like im trying to figure out how many hours its taking each wu to complete.

HFM will do that after you point it to the proper directory so it can access the log file. It will give you a start date and time, a finish date and time, plus a time per frame.

You must go to Tools>Work Unit History Viewer

    my example is shown below.

I did! So i install this on my windows machine, and give it my servers ip then?

It does Windows too! All the help you need should be there, it's everyone's favourite these day's. Harlam357 got sick of FahMon and coded this instead. There's a forum there too for specific questions IIRC.

Welcome back Colemanguy to the fold. :major

We can use all the spare cpu cycles the server at your disposal will provide.

be advised the SMP client will cause at least a 20 degree Fahrenheit increase in temperature on each cpu involved, though this is from my experience from my lowly duel core 4200+/5200+ x2 64 AMD cpu's,Xeon cpu's may handle the computations better.(less heat)

also the SMP WU has approximately 4 days to finish to receive the bonus points otherwise you will receive the regular point value, plus 10 WU's need to be completed first to qualify for the bonus points.

a passkey is needed to receive bonus points

I have another computer using HFM that I monitor from this computer (via http) so I don't have to manually hook up the monitor to check, which uploads to my personal ftp space about 15 to 20 minutes to view at my leisure or anyone else that has my ftp web site address posted in a previous post(s).

I believe v7 beta client will do as you ask.

this explains about what this client does,Client Connection panel seems to be what you are asking about.

    faq concerning v7 beta client

    v7 download

my understanding is both clients provide the same point/production ratio

I prefer the v6 client myself w/HFM as my F@H monitoring program.

    fold on

I've stopped too and the weather here is not even close to yours. Why donate when one has to suck the heat out with A/C, triple the cost perhaps? I can't afford that.

I have electric heating so instead of turning on the baseboard heater when it gets to that time, I'll turn on a CPU/GPU instead.:)
