Greetings :wave yea been a while for me too, but hey,. sometimes life gets in the way.

OK, I have Windows XP SP3 and installed a IE 8 Blocker from here, in LATE 2008. Now, my ISP installed IE 8 without removing the blocker. How can I remove it, or does it need to be removed? I am sure it does, as IE 8 is totally unusable to me as it is ..

I am wondering, if I unblock the IE 8 Blocker, if it will allow it to work. As it is now, I can't do squat with it..

    TIA!

Hi TeeCee, great seeing you. :wave

I remember us 2 disabling IE8 in 2009. Finally I installed IE8 in Nov 2010 and it went without a hitch.

    To enable IE8:
Start>Run and Type CMD and enter. At the C:
    Type: IE80Blocker.cmd /U

    To remove: IE8 type: IE80Blocker.cmd /B

You should see a message that the operation was completed successfully or something like that.

    That's it.

:wave Oma! good seein gyou too! That is what I had written down too, BUT when I do that. I get the message that it is an invalid file. I didn't install IE8, my ISP did. I have no idea how he did that witht he blocker on it. :confused

I am not a big fan of this IE8 either!

You can download the tool here:
Toolkit to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 8

Open a cmd.exe window in the folder where you save the download and enter the following at the command prompt:
    IE80Blocker.cmd /U

If you can't open a cmd.exe window directly in that folder, just navigate to that location at the prompt.

Hope that takes care of it. ;)

I see a lot of block and unblock IE8. So, are you trying to uninstall IE8, since you stated that IE8 got installed? Then block the IE8 install?

Sorry, I didn't see that your ISP did that. :-o I'd be immediately on the phone giving him sh*t if they did that. Don't understand HOW that could have occurred!!

If you like to remove IE8 here is a link from MSFT on how to do that.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700#stepsforxp

and this info below if you don't find IE8 in Add/Remove Programs
After that I'd block IE 8 again by following the instructions given to you previously because you probably don't want to be hassled by Windows Update for that IE8 update.

    Hope this helps TeeCee

Yes, Oma I did. How they did that with the block on, I have no idea, unless he went into safe mode. :confused Now that it is on, I am so tired of trying to get answers, I will just leave it on.

Thanks I found the files and deleted them . IE 8 has been installed (by my ISP NOT me) so I wanted to remove the blocker. I am going to get used to this IE 8 yet! (one way or another!)

Yes, TF, I had it blocked but when I got my tower back it was on. Still trying to get used to it.. rolleyes

It does seem to work better on the dial up, with my DUN that FF does. I have FF 4.0 and it is SLOW! rolleyes

:-D Now that it is installed, I will keep it . I was trying to find the "IE 8 Blocker " I had installed earlier.. I'll keep it.. Heck, got to surf with something! :wave

Hey Oma, if that wasn't enough, they also reset my Internet settings, thru the registry.. Yeah, talk about FUN! NOT! I don't mess with the registry myself. I never heard of that even being done. :eek

I would run an updated antimalware scan just to be on the safe side.
Never come across a situation where an ISP can download and install any program onto a clients computer without your permission.

If you are now planning on keeping the IE8 version, then, as it is installed, I would suggest that you leave the blocker where it is , as it does not appear to have worked.

Ah, believe I get it now, the proverbial light bulb going off. :-D Must have been an IT tech then (from your ISP?) who played with your machine? If so, he must have reversed the command script you wrote quite a while back to block IE8? Don't worry about any *installation* of the IE8 blocker since it was only a command script and not really an installation of software.

In that case he should have consulted with you whether you wanted IE8 or not. DUH!

Am glad you are starting to like IE8. I hardly ever use it myself as I am an aficionado of Fx and Palemoon browsers.

Thanks OMA and Halo.. I scanned with MB and no issues.. No, I was not consulted, and I did let them know I was NOT a happy camper!

Halo, :-o (just still seeyou as halo! :-D ) you mentions several years ago, about Web Accelerators are good, but dont' get updated often enough. Exactly what happened here. My browsers were updateing faster than the WA I was paying my ISP for, that I got in 2008. Now they wer supposd to fix the WA, as it was crashing on me, and giving me some terrible errors. I ended up taking in the tower to them, as it was THEIR software, not Microsoft's. So, why should I allow the eror to be sent to Microsfot? When I got my tower back I had IE8, Internet connections are zip in the settigns, and when I called them they said they had to reset them thru the registry.. :eek Fist thing that came to mind, was :eek I never messed with the connection settings.

Yes, Oma it was a IT Tech from my ISP.. Are we having fun yet? I have had errors, but they were all WA errors. "Faulting application" No blue screens, and no other issues.

Now, it is updated, but I had to do prozxy exclusions to get into soem websites. ( I only go to a couple as it is!)

Hope you didn't have to pay your ISP for their errors since it was not your fault for your machine to misbehave?

Strange that you're seeing a zip in the settings but then I know zilch about that anyway. Is your PC functioning okay now? If not, I'd contact them to have it fixed once and for all!

Yes, I did have to pay them, Now if only I could learn to spell! :-D

Yes, it is working fine. Always did, just had Web Accelerator errors, is all. When I took it in, I had I.E. 7 and FF 3.6.17.

When I got it home, I had I.E. 8, FF 3.5.2. I updated FF to 4.0.1, and DEMANDED a WA update.. I have had this WA since 2008. Just think if your JAVA didn't update for a few YEARS! :eek!

Yeah, I thought the same on the settings. to.. But also, never had to do Proxy exclusions before either.
