I recently upgraded my netbook to the latest netbook release of Ubuntu and ever since Skype has failed to function.

I click on the icon to launch the program, the login window stays open for a few seconds and then disappears.

Even if I am on the ball enough to get my password typed in during this brief time the window disappears and never logs in.

or is it because MS just bought Skype and this is part of their business plan?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix (UNR); there is a 10.10 UNR(?), but 11.04 merged the desktop and netbook versions. Which "latest" version of netbook are you running?

I installed Skype from the Ubuntu 10.04 repositiories, but it was impossible to get working. On a hunch, I installed Skype from a Skype PPA and it worked just fine, almost immediately, with minimal tweaking.

Sounds like you installed Skype from a PPA (?) and it "broke" when you upgraded to the latest version. I'd go back to the PPA and look for the version that matches your upgrade. If none exists, I'd reinstall the version you already have and see if that fixes the "broken" element. Good luck!
